NDSU should have some luck later in the portal if they want to go that way once guys realize their market to be a starter probably isn't what they hoped for or could look to some late bloomer HS kids who blow up this summer and aren't likely to be heavily recruited due to schools focusing so much on the portal. The issue with recruiting portal Freshman is that would add to our already large class from last year, not ideal in balancing recruiting classes. I'm thinking we either find a more veteran player or go the HS route to balance out the scholarships a bit.
Do you think it is really important anymore to balance out recruiting classes? Seems to me it was very important before the portal, but it seems like things will take care of themselves now and you just go get the best players and if people are not getting minutes they will transfer.
    If it flies it dies.

Long for the days of freezing in the south stands of Dacotah Field.

Yes, it's still important, not to the degree it once was because you can also recruit different year players from the portal to fill gaps but you need to be able to have scholarships available each year for recruiting, but if you tie up 6-8 scholarships in 1 class it means you'll have a very limited number to go out and get players over the other 3 classes. If Grant stays in the NBA draft, we'll have 3 scholarships available but only 1 senior next season in Boden, word is he may also stick around for a Covid 5th year which means we'd add no new available scholarships to that list. If we add 3 HS players or freshman or sophomore transfers we then would have no scholarships to offer for next season unless someone transfers which certainly can happen but you'd go through the early signing period without a scholarship available. You could obviously fudge the math and offer Boden's and then if he decides to play another year count on one player leaving but still a bind you don't want to be in. I'm thinking we'll bring in 1 more player for sure and a second if Grant doesn't return but I'd be shocked if we didn't head into next season with a scholarship available. One solution would be signing a grad transfer in which case that scholarship would be available for sure next year anyway but those are tough to find and get at the mid major level if you're looking for players better than what's already on your roster.

Any chance you can respectfully bring something else to the table? Or better yet, say it to his face. Be the bigger man and just book an appointment and just talk. Being an internet jerk is getting you no place. You hi jack every thread with the same old song. Please.
Everyone just relax, all right? Believe me, if there's one thing Ron Burgundy knows, it's women.

hijacking? just posting win losses and lack of quality wins isn't hijacking.

back in 2009 watching woodside was the start then in 2014 watching ndsu beat oklahoma we all thought NDSU could become a bigtime mid major and we wanted Craig Smith as coach sitting at BWWS Sioux Falls.
Now its going on 10 years and NDSU needs its Basketball Program to become bigger than its Football Program if our football program isn't allowed to move FBS. That's where I am coming from. It's been average in a horrible conference.

Transfer Portal has seen oru, usd, und pick up MWC, C-USA & Big 12 guys respectively while we just wait around.

    Your continually justifying yourself
Obviously no one sees it your way so your view may be jaded or wrong maybe you need to re evaluate if you want to continue to follow ndsu basketball you wouldn’t be missed

ORU, USD and UND's rosters were also completely gutted by guys leaving....so you'd rather us lose everybody and start over? Is that what you're saying? We have an entire starting lineup and 4 rotation guys returning (plus another coming off redshirt) and possibly a player in the NBA or him coming back and you act like we're missing out on the portal. We made it to the Summit League championship game with 4 FRESHMAN (2 STARTERS and 2 in rotation), 3 SOPHOMOREs (1 starter, 2 rotation guys, one being a 1st year transfer) and 2 JUNIORS. WE PLAYED ZERO SENIORS. We competed for the top of the league with one of the least experienced teams in the league. Every single one of those players will be better this year than last year and you act like without snagging guys in the portal we are doomed. We already have a terrific roster and will have the best roster in the league if Grant is back.

You literally make no fucking sense, ever. Craig Smith would've been great, for 2 years before he left and moved on and left us hanging again. You live in fucking fantasy land, this is the real word.

Yea hell with Craig Smith and 2 great years, but instead lets do 10 years in mediocrity & miss our chance at becoming a legit mid major. the BISON WAY (outside of football)

i never said NDSU would lose everybody.

If Grant does leave...we are going to be playing a lot of small ball. We will only have two bigs on the roster plus Streit.

I could see us playing pretty small.

    Wheeler
    Miller (Waddles)
    White (Dissette)
    Skunny (Hastreitor)
    Morgan (Streit backup?)

I gave Richman and the MBB program a lot of shit last year for losing all those guys to the portal (including the guys who should've been the returning team leaders like Jarius Cook and MHH) but you've gotta give Richman and staff credit for keeping this young core of players out of the portal *knockonwood* this year. Grant Nelson's uncertainty not withstanding this is a pretty big accomplishment considering over 1500 D1 players have entered the transfer portal this spring. That's over 4 per program on average and the only player NDSU looks like they'll lose (other than Nelson - which is still not a certainty) would be Jacob Yoder and that's a move that benefits both team and player IMO.

Hopefully this isn't a mirage and they can have more offseasons like this one than the last when it comes to contributing players transferring.
