    Could be. Could be any number of things. Roster turnover could be factored in. Recruiting rankings. Historical program strength. Historical conference strength. Regression to the mean.

    Right, and that sagarin makes a lot more sense once the teams are "connected" with enough games. Even they basically say its somewhat garbage until that point.

    It would be interesting to know what they use for preseason though. I agree preseason polls or ratings aren’t very informative but ironically preseason polls actually can add predictive value to models for late season or bowl games simply because the season is so short.
