    Default NCAA Media Rules Review

Steve Shaw is the head of the CFO (College Football Officials) and editor of the NCAA rules. He's a former SEC referee and supervisor of officials for the SEC. Each week he produces a training video for CFO members and creates a version for the media to better understand the rules. I've linked each of the videos done so far this year. You may or may not find them interesting.

Week 10 has 5 new plays. Two of them are FCS games one of which from ISU-WIU. There have been several conversations about limited cameras at FCS games. I'm sure Western Illinois has very limited camera angles. It does appear the ISU player was able to recover in bounds but a sideline view would be nice.

Thanks for posting these - they are very good and I am definitely learning a lot.
The white jerseys are the best. Don't even bother to argue.

I just can't figure out what anyone gets out of dropping the ball early before one scores. Some kind of jollies? The one where the guy ignores the kickoff was another good one. Did not know you can't advance those, just like a touched punt.

The simplified version of the rule is the kicking team can't advance a kick unless it's a scrimmage kick that hasn't crossed the neutral zone (i.e. blocked punt or FG). They are awarded a new series (1st and 10) if the receiving team touches the scrimmage kick beyond the neutral zone or if it's a free kick then are legally allowed to touch (i.e. touched by receiving team or 10 yards/touched the ground). The kick ends when it's possessed by the receiving team so if the returner catches/recovers the kick and subsequently fumbles and the kicking team recovers they can advance that. It wasn't a kick when the recovered.

You often hear announcers say you can't advance a muff. It's really that the kicking team can't advance a kick whether or not it's been muffed. It's a silly semantics thing but something that drives officials nuts.

Indy, last one was awesome. So, if the receiving player on the onside kick would have accidently batted it forward, would it then be an illegal forward pass giving a rekick opportunity?
