As for the non call on the TGT the main question is if he lowered his head and led with the crown. Is the crown only the top of the helmet or just including part of the top.

I have run this by several experienced officials I know and the response is mixed. A lot of that has to do with what their conference is advising on how much of the crown needs to be involved. Steve Shaw, head of the CFO (organization intended to coordinate rule interpretations and mechanics across all conferences) has directed the forehead area above the facemask is considered part of the crown. You can definitely argue that part of the helmet was involved but it was mostly facemask with that part of the helmet as well.

This action is dangerous even if the crown wasn't involved and safety fouls are supposed to err on the side of foul. This wasn't a 100%-OMG-someone-needs-to-be-fired kind of play. But it wouldn't surprise me at all if the grader and supervisor for the MVFC felt this should have been a foul. But it also wouldn't surprise me if they supported it as well. You can justify either.

Some calls aren't absolutely right or wrong. Some are just calls. I think I've said that before.

That call was inconsistent with how it's been called. It's really been emphasized lately and if it's close, they've usually leaned toward targeting. I think that's why this was so surprising to me. Plus it was such a violant play that you'd think that would put it over the edge, even if that's not officially part of the criteria. It was as dangerous of play as I've seen and if the point is to protect players, well.....

The league today said it was a miss. Officials are human and make mistakes so that's not surprising.

    From McFeeley's article....

NBC's Terry McAulay, a former NFL official who is the network's rules expert for Sunday Night Football and Notre Dame games, was much less diplomatic Monday morning when I sent him a video clip of the play and asked for a critique.

"This is a stunning error by the replay official," McAulay told me.

Luckily it didn't impact the game's outcome and #1 wasn't injured.

To me the gray area here underscores the need to separate targeting calls into two separate categories. There's far too much inconsistency in how these are called to have an automatic ejection riding on the call. For instance when these same two teams played in 2017 Jabril Cox got ejected for a tackle that seemed a lot less dangerous than the one Watson took: https://youtu.be/wd_K_DSYXqo?t=7262

Cox got ejected and then had to miss the first half of the next game against SDSU (the only game NDSU lost that year). Separate them a la flagrant fouls in basketball and have both be a 15 yard personal foul but targeting 1 is only an ejection if it's a player's 2nd of the game whereas targeting 2 is still an automatic ejection.

I still remember the guy from Nicholls getting kicked out of a playoff game for a really ticky tack one: https://youtu.be/HnPPZS3WHVU?t=3370

Cox was stumbling out of a block, this UNI dumbass who retweeted a clip of his targeting head hunting, lined up and launched into Watson's head.

McElvain seems like a good kid. His best two games were against Iowa State. Hope the best for him.

I agree with both of these opinions.

I never saw him as a QB that could lead a team deep into the playoffs but it says something about the player or the program when someone decides to leave mid season. Covid season was an outlier.
