First home match and conference opener vs UMKC.

UMKC is tough, beat the Bison in both meetings last year, and were ahead of the Bison in the preseason conference poll.

Excite to see all of the newcomers tonight. Game is supposed to be on WDAY Xtra too, so tune in.

Tough 3-1 loss for the Bison. This was a very young team vs a very old team. UMKC's 4 best players tonight were all seniors, while NDSU was starting 3 true freshmen. UMKC also had the 2 best players on the court in Schomers and Brecka.

Bison battled back in the first set and had two set points, but couldn't convert. On the 2nd set point of the first set, UMKC got a kill that stayed in by probably less than an inch.

Mixed bag for the newcomers IMO. Reilly had some really great plays, but wasn't great setting the ball. Part of that was from some really poor passes out of service reception, especially early on, which made her job more challenging. Boling had some flash plays, but always had several very bad errors. She also seemed to really struggle with multiple jumps on some of the long points. She looks like she has a really high ceiling, but it'll take some time. Stark was a mixed bag too. She read the play so well and positioned herself really well, she just didn't always get to the ball and make a good pass.

Hicks and Glover both had some really good moments too. Glover in particular showed some great power and hops.

For the returning players, Tanchin was really good IMO and looked more consistent than last year. I thought Hinze was really solid serving and defensively, but really inconsistent on offense. She got in a prolonged spell where the sets weren't perfect, and rather than making an adjustment to the ball, she continually wouldn't swing and just push the ball over. Allie Scheiweller had some good moments in their best set too.

Next up is ORU on Saturday.

Nope, not this year. USD and Omaha brought everybody back and are really tough. If there is a team to usurp to get in the top 4, I think it is UMKC. NDSU can hang with Omaha but Omaha is still probably better.

This team is way younger than each of the top 4 teams and while they should grow, Omaha, USD, Denver, and UMKC have a head start.

Yeah, they aren't playing well right now in any facet.

They have 4 liberos and routinely have 3 out there at a time, but the service reception and passes out of it are not good, which is baffling. It's putting Reilly in a bad position and she isn't good enough yet to overcome those bad passes. That leads to less than perfect sets to the outside hitters, and Hinze rarely swings unless the set is perfect.

The freshmen have been really rough of late too. Alexis Boling was starting early in the year and then she started the Summit season making way too many mistakes and was benched for most of ORU and didn't play vs USD. Abby stark couldn't keep her serves in vs ORU, and even sophomore star Hinze was (deservedly) benched vs ORU.

This team is very young and the coaches are tasked with balancing development (which generally comes with more playing time) vs trying to win now. Personally, I would lean towards playing the kids, as USD, Omaha, UMKC, and Denver are a different tier than NDSU and ORU also beat NDSU. For upperclassmen, I'd still play Glover and Tanchin (Probably Hanger as a 3rd libero and Hicks as a rotational MB too, since Boling is the only young MB that looks like she might be a long term answer), but other than them, I'd roll with the underclassmen in hopes they learn and it leads to a better year next year.

There is a lot of talent, it's just very young.
