The offense was pretty good in those areas last year - they ran for 266 yards per game at 6.1 yards per carry which is better numbers than the 2013 team put up in those categories. Similarly 3rd down conversion percentage on the season was 51% which was slightly above 2019 and ahead of every team since 2011 with the exception of 2013 and 2018.
The defense is where the lapse came last year. They allowed 157 rush yards per game at 4.3 yards per carry - both of which were cumulative season highs since 2011. They also allowed 41.7% 3rd down conversions which was also a high and the only other year they allowed higher than 40% 3rd down conversion on the season (since 2011) was 2016.
For all the whining about Roehl and the offense the defense is where the swagger needs to be re-discovered at this fall. The offense might struggle to replicate those rushing numbers with 2 OL and an RB from last year's team on opening day NFL rosters - but hopefully the passing game improves to pick up the slack.

I'm looking forward to this season more than I have since around 2015 although this is the first year we didn't buy any tickets (except for the EWU game) hoping to get better seats from unused season tickets getting resold.
It's OK to not be OK.
Professor Chaos makes some good points with numbers to back them up. In the past, NDSU made so many clutch plays when needed on offense but it just did not happen last year too many times. Think of all the games especially in playoffs decided by 1-2 plays that our offense made. Georgia Southern and Brock, KSU and Brock, UNI and Shephard, SDSU and RJ, ISUred and Wentz/RJ, Iowa and Stick, JMU and Trey.
Last year we were rolling against SDSU but could not cash in after a BS penalty. Arizona we had it 4 and short in 4th quarter and got stuffed after calling a TO.
But, it’s a team game and D, O, special teams and coaches need to work together.
NDSU fans that are bailing on this game should just try and give away their tickets & consider it a donation
tickets sold will be thousands over butts in seats
NDSU TO FBS. HAVEN'T WE WON ENOUGH?
Well. Actually they have beat us four times in a row. People seem to forget that. Weird how this has happened under our new coaching staff. That’s the common denominator. SDSU has always been good. We have slipped. Question we will see this year is how far.

SDSU has been sneaking up behind us for years. We have just not been watching. Sooner or later, the factors that derailed our momentum will also derail theirs. Not sour grapes, just in their core, they are not much different than us. However, it may take several years for some of these factors to affect them. Even their band is clearly better than ours. I do believe we need a new AD. A tough love talking to the head coach here and a few of his assistants. It is going to get worse before it gets better unless the "riot act" is read around here. We are also dealing with (starting in 2024) with Minnesota free tuition (for families making less than $80,000). Don't think for one minute that is not going to affect the bottom line in all aspects of NDSU, enrollment, sports and a ripple effect felt throughout North Dakota. This ND state legislature needs to get moving on this. A full 27 states out of 50 have free tuition in some capacity. If NoDak doesn't get going, they are going to be left in the dust. The free tuition of Minnesota does not impact South Dakota like it affects the eastern half of NoDak. Even though 2024 is a year away, already Minnesota seniors are looking at colleges.
Sdsu wasn't sneaking up on anyone. Programs like uni and sdsu made it very clear what they have been doing for the past 14 years. Sdsu maybe longer. While NDSU has been building a program to beat anyone, those two programs have been focused on one singular goal. To beat NDSU. Recruiting position by position, writing play by play, lifting weight by weight. Not only have they been doing this, they said they were doing this. Sdsu was much more successful. Can they sustain?
As far as the tuition business. How many in the football program will be affected by this?

Directly, who knows? But indirectly, how will a student body of 10,000 impact athletic funding?
