We’re not picking games to “highlight the NDSU vs GSU” matchup, we’re counting down the top 25 greatest NSDU D1 era football games from an NDSU perspective. Considering the hype leading up to this, the jarring from GSU fans beforehand, and the absolute shit stomping we gave you (while our QB was suffering from the flu), this one’s appropriately placed in the top 10.

I would take it as a compliment that a non traditional rival will be 2 out of the top 10 games in NDSU DI history(according to one Bisonville member).

September 24th, 2011: North Dakota State @ Minnesota

The 2011 season started with a ton of excitement around the program following their playoff run to the national quarterfinals (and nearly further) the previous year with a fairly young team but this game was the first real measuring stick for how good the 2011 team could be. Thousands of Bison fans made their way inside TCF Bank Stadium to give the game a pretty neutral feel and the Bison played a clean first half pulling ahead 21-14 on a DJ McNorton TD run with 24 seconds left until the break. Then it happened... a poorly executed desperation heave by Minnesota at the end of the half was intercepted by Colten Heagle who attempted to lateral as he was being tackled. The ball bounced once on the turf and Minneapolis native Marcus Williams promptly picked it up in stride and waltzed in for a TD with zeros on the clock giving the Bison a 28-14 halftime lead. They kept the Gophers at arms length in the 2nd half until Williams again came up huge intercepting backup QB Max Shortell's pass late in the 4th quarter returning it for his 2nd TD of the game stretching the Bison lead to the eventual final score of 37-24. It was NDSU's 2nd straight win over the Big Ten's Golden Gophers and moved the #12/#8 Bison to 3-0 on the 2011 season.

Game highlights: Can't find the official NDSU highlights so this fan-made one will have to do.

I remember Brock having some extra zip on his passes that game. It stood out in warm-ups and in the game his throws were explosive. I also remember the lines of Bison fans waiting for the buses to haul us back to the tailgate lot. Finally, the UM fans around us set the standard for the worst opposing fan behavior that I've seen at any sporting event.
North Dakota State, a football team the big boys of college football should avoid like the plague, helped christen a $90 million renovation to Snyder Family Stadium — including a statue of famed Kansas State coach Bill Snyder himself — by taking a sledgehammer to the place.

I was living in the Twin Cities at the time and a few friends invited us to tailgate. I was not invited back.

Our D1 history shows we actually would win 66% of the time.

My point was more how shitty a fanbase they are. Fuckem.

January 6th, 2018: James Madison vs North Dakota St (FCS Championship Game)

Not everyone agreed with me but I felt like this game was a tipping point of sorts as to who was the gold standard in the FCS. Yes, NDSU had won 5 national titles from 2011-2015 compared to JMU's one in 2016 (they also won the 2004 national title) but they had beaten the Bison in the Fargodome in the 2016 semis and had spent the entire 2017 season to this point as the top ranked team in the FCS now riding a 26 game win streak. In any case I think the stakes for this game were a little higher than "just" a national title as these two teams had been on a collision course ever since their previous meeting. The Bison defense played heroically overcoming the absence of their top two CBs and some shoddy special teams play. A 50 yard lightning bolt on 3rd and 17 from Easton Stick to Darrius Shepherd (Shepherd's first TD of that season) helped them take a 17-6 lead into halftime. The offense sputtered after the break but the defense kept coming up huge. JMU brought it to within 4 and drove inside the NDSU red zone with time dwindling in the game but the Bison defense turned them over on downs and the offense closed it out with an Easton Stick 4th down slide as the clock hit zeros for a hard fought 17-13 victory. The win avenged the painful semifinal loss to the Dukes the season before that broke the title streak and earned the Bison their 6th national title in the past 7 years reaffirming their dominance over the subdivision.
