The putting thing it a little bit over blown at this point I think because she hits so many greens. It think she was in the top 5 season to date when I looked the other week. It’s kind of getting into Jeter’s defense territory. it’s true but it shouldn’t overshadow every other part of her game.

I don't think it's overblown at all. She is on a lot of greens in regulation but she doesn't convert with birdies most of the time. If she putts in the 26 to 28 putts per round while keep her stellar greens in regulation, she will win.

When she was finally on TV yesterday and missed a very short putt for par, the look from Julie Inkster wasn't encouraging. Putting is VERY important.

Yeah, like they/we say “drive for show, putt for dough”.

I’m still workin on the show part.

    And the dough of course…

Was watching the US Open last night. I was amazed by all the putts from distance dropping in the can.

I think your putting to much emphasis on it is all. If you miss every green and have 18 putts you just shot par.

fewer puts would obviously be better but hitting more greens as opposed to less is better too.

They make them from all over the place Greenfield, and almost the bigger aspect of that is that they fully expect to make them. Nobody was more taken aback by a lipped out twenty footer than Tiger. I think that the key is a consistent putting stroke coupled with an expectation of success that many just don’t have. Now, you have to have great ball striking to have those chances like an Inbee Park, but in the LPGA distance is way down the list behind ball striking and putting. Amy doesn’t need to be Inbee or Christie Kerr good in putting, but she has to be closer to that level coupled with the other great things that she is already doing! And she is doing a whole bunch of great stuff with GIR and ball striking etc. If she gets into and stays in the top 50 in PPR and PPGIR, I think she will be in good shape. And none of this is intended as criticism, as it is a lot easier said than done to be doing any part of what she has already accomplished.

    GoAmy…GoBison!!

    PPGIR:

Amy has improved in both of these stats, and no doubt the more important of the two is PPGIR where she is at 59th right now. I think Inbee has led that stat almost more times than not! Amy’s stock is moving up nicely with that!

I haven’t seen any numbers published for the LPGA for strokes gained putting. That is probably more important than both of these others. Not sure that the LPGA even tracks strokes gained.

Strokes gained is the gold standard it does a much better job of isolating the actual skills. As we’ve been talking about putting stats are tangled up with approach which is tangled up with driving. The LPGA doesn’t have the tech for strokes gained. You need the lasers on every hole on every course. That said they also don’t bother to calculate an adjusted scoring average for which all you need are the round by round scores.

Thanks for that BA! I thought that was the case. One thing seems sure about Amy at this juncture and for some time now, and that is her ball striking. Both the stats and the commentators seem to agree on her prowess in this regard! And the sheer beauty of how she accomplishes it! She was hanging on to the first spot for GIR for some time, and now sits fifth I think. (Oops. Make that sixth).
