    Default Double first base

Totally on brand for the NCAA to be decades behind the rest of the world on adopting the safety base. Apparently they’re experimenting with it and it can be used in regular season games if both clubs agree, they get a waiver from the NCAA and agree to collect additional data. What a crock. They continue to give zero shits about athletes.

We all live in stories... It seems to me that a definition of any living vibrant society is that you constantly question those stories... The argument itself is freedom. It's not that you come to a conclusion about it. Through that argument you change your mind sometimes... That's how societies grow. Probably because I had my face remodeled in a collision at first base and it’s a cheap and effective way to prevent most of that while not changing the game at all.

I know at least 4 people who this has happened to. But you might be correct, I’ve still only got anecdotes here.

I doesn’t have to be. The intervention is cheap and the costs associated with the injuries are large. The marginal increase in my dental expenses would probably cover the marginal cost of safety bases for the local park board where the collision occurred for a lifetime. What’s the lifetime cost of a blown ACL? A dislocated elbow? Etc. One avoided injury pays for a lot of bases.

Can't believe it, Audit, but I 100% agree with you on this issue. I've umpired baseball and softball for 30 plus years. I've seen it all at first base. I've seen what happened to you. I have seen baserunners receive nasty sprains and broken ankles. I've seen first basemen get spike wounds like you wouldn't believe. The runner's lane (it starts 45 feet from home plate) is supposed to help this situation. The runner is required to have both feet inside the marked runner's lane to first base unless he is running in foul territory. He can run on the inside ( on the infield grass to first as long as he doesn't get hit with a thrown ball or hinder the first baseman catching the ball. If he gets hit with a thrown ball and he has one foot on the grass or outside the runner's lane, he's guilty of runner's lane interference and will be called out, or should be if the umpires know their rules, which in a lot of cases, they don't. Double bases would help greatly because there would be absolutely no reason for the batter runner to be outside (either in foul territory or on the grass) of the runner's lane.
