St. Thomas to DI-approved

St. Thomas was approved for DI today. They will play in the Pioneer for football, WCHA for Women's hockey and Summit for all others. I've got to think this will be a potential non-conference opponent.

Reusse weighs in. Sounds like they are fully committed to the Pioneer, even though the travel is absolutely brutal. Probably the only way they can do it with both MIH and WIH, even though they are relatively rich. Regarding the latter:

Fortunately it's only one sport and at most 4 conference road games per year. Drake and Valpo are potential bus rides so if one of those is a road game each year that helps. They'll spend more in travel for the other sports in the Summit.

The talk is that St. Thomas is doing this with basketball as likely the biggest beneficiaries. While it would be years down the road it has been mentioned in the Minneapolis papers that UST likely has their sights set on trying to join the Big East conference for basketball down the road to essentially try to become Minnesota's version of Marquette.

This makes the most sense to me. Like Tony said, facilities are really going to hurt them in football unless they just adopt Allianz as their home field (no clue if that is an option at all). But hoops will be much easier and more plausible to have an on-campus arena that can attract some good players and interest. Will be interesting. Could be a scenario where football is a non-entity and the hoops improvement brings good attention to the Bison and the conference itself. Could also be a scenario where they get to use Allianz for football, do backdoor schollies and totally screw us. WTF knows!
