There are a number of FCS teams that if given the additional financial resources this would provide they would do just fine at the next level.

The key take aways from the article for me -- the SI author and I are in complete agreement about the two things:

1. there are a lot of FBS teams that have no business fielding a team at the FBS level
2. the only FCS team that truly could compete at the FBS level is NDSU

Depends on how you define compete. I'd bet that any team that makes regular appearances in the 2nd round of the FCS playoffs could compete with the bottom half of of this redesigned FBS. This might be my green-colored glasses, but I like to think NDSU is the only FCS team with a realistic chance of consistently being in the top 1/2 of any conference with a little more money to spend.

Completely agree!! There are a number of FCS teams that could be middling "cannon fodder" teams for P5 teams to stomp OOC as "FBS" games... but only the Bison have the pedigree and culture needed to be a respected FBS team. Might sound arrogant, but I base that opinion on their complete body of work.

I don't think the general public understands how the NCAA works (hint - the conferences have the pull). I was in the same boat until I had a conversation with Gene Taylor over a decade ago while we (USAW) were running our tournament at the FargoDome.

I'd argue that there are times the NCAA doesn't know how the NCAA works.
