Perhaps someone can enlighten me on the reason/significance of the "Van" in front of most Dutch names? I've pondered this for many years. Wouldn't it be simpler to just write their last part of their name then to insert the "Van"? If you live in a Dutch community, everybody knows you're Dutch...….seems rather superfluous to me.

Always thought it meant "from". In laws have a dutch name like that.

Edit. Yes, Vander basically means "From the" as in from the family of... fill in the last blank.

Very similar to the "von" in German names, except that the Germans used to have a rule that only nobility could use it.
