As I understand it every player on the 2020 roster gets an extra year to complete their eligibility (so 6 years to play 4/5 instead of 5 years to play 4). However, the scholarship limit will only be increased for the 2021 season presumably to allow for teams to let their seniors have a "real season" under scholarship to finish off their careers. Then after that it's back to 63 scholarships max amongst 85 players max in the FCS in 2022.
I wonder if the increased limit in 2021 will really affect anyone in the FCS though with the financial strain all programs will be under. Will NDSU Athletics have the money to hand out an extra 10-15 football scholarships in fall 2021??? I suspect many 6th year seniors in 2021 will be given the choice to pay their own way to play one more year or get started with the rest of their lives. Might be a tough decision especially since the majority should have undergrad degrees by this summer.
