Bill Connelly is the guy behind this approach. He was at football outsiders before ESPN. A version of this model has been around for at least six years, though not applied to FCS before this season from what I can see. It’s pretty sophisticated stuff. Uses play by play data to get at offensive and defensive efficiency and explosiveness. He’s got the FCS version tagged as “beta” so I wonder if they’ve got all of that detail available to make the full model go or if he’s had to adjust his approach to cope with less information. Or he could just be tinkering with it again. I’m not behind the espn paywall, but his published stuff from before regarding SP+ he’s pretty transparent about his process of retooling and experimenting with the model over time.

We all live in stories... It seems to me that a definition of any living vibrant society is that you constantly question those stories... The argument itself is freedom. It's not that you come to a conclusion about it. Through that argument you change your mind sometimes... That's how societies grow. When you can't retell for yourself the stories of your life then you live in a prison... Somebody else controls the story. - S. Rushdie
