    Default Entrance Exam cheating scandal

    https://edition.cnn.com/2019/03/12/u...eating-scheme/

This is so bizarre that I'm not even sure how to explain it yet.

The purpose of the alleged scam was to help student athletes get into college as recruited athletes, regardless of their athletic ability, according to the indictment. It alleges that a third party took the ACT and SAT college entrance exams in place of students. The documents also allege that some defendants created fake athletic profiles for students to make them appear to be successful athletes and get them into college.
At first I thought there was a typo in the quote above (see bold) but apparently that is correct. They fake being an athlete AND cheat on their SATs. Take about a "belt and suspenders" approach to cheating.

I don't know why these well to do folks just didn't influence the colleges the old fashioned way... Just buy them a hockey arena.

This. I know there is a lot more to this story than that. However, I don't get why people are so shocked by this. People have been getting special treatment for admission into schools for a LONG time. Who do you think these buildings around campuses are named after?

This is a 15 grand at a time racket not 15 million.

We all live in stories... It seems to me that a definition of any living vibrant society is that you constantly question those stories... The argument itself is freedom. It's not that you come to a conclusion about it. Through that argument you change your mind sometimes... That's how societies grow. When you can't retell for yourself the stories of your life then you live in a prison... Somebody else controls the story. - S. Rushdie

IMO your statement is a bit of a generalization. There are many buildings named after people who have made altruistic contributions to the growth and well-being of their Universities.
The only reason some people get lost in thought is because it's unfamiliar territory.

One thing I'll guarantee: Nobody who ever donated money to NDSU for a building was doing it so their progeny would get admitted.

No, not Lori Loughlin! I've had a crush on her since the movie Rad.

I'm surprised of the complexity of this scheme to subvert the admissions process. Thought it would be more direct greasing of the wheels and less dog and pony show.

So if I am reading this right, if you are designated an athletic "recruit", you can gain admission even if you are never actually on a team? Is that common? Seems as though it would have been pretty easy to see through.

Loughlin and her husband, fashion designer Mossimo Giannulli, were accused of paying $500,000 in bribes so their two daughters would be designated as recruits for the University of Southern California crew team – even though they were not part of the team. That helped the pair get into USC, according to the complaint.
