To put Payton's accomplishment into perspective. The US National indoors are in New York this weekend and his throw would have placed him 2nd just behind the 2016 Olympic gold medalist and ahead of the 2016 Olympic silver medal winner!

Former NDSU Shot Put record holder, Alex Renner, took 6th in that event at the meet referenced above. (62' 6 3/4")
The winner of the event, Ryan Crouser, threw 72' 10 3/4"....This is the same guy that held the NCAA indoor record before Payton broke it this past weekend.

Okay folks, explain the difference between indoor and outdoor shot put? Is outdoor heavier?
The weight of both the indoor and outdoor shot puts are the same. Each weighs 16 pounds (7.26 kg).
The indoor shot's covering is synthetic. There are various types of metal fillers and the softness can vary.
The allowable diameters range from 110 mm to 145 mm.
The outdoor shot must be made of metal. The only two metals that I'm aware of (in terms of manufacturing) are iron and brass. The NCAA rules state that no metal softer than brass is allowed.
The allowable diameters must be between 110 mm and 130 mm.
