The first time he likely sees the third player is when the contact is made. He has no idea how the defender got there. It's not a foul if the defender was blocked into that hit or he was already engaged with the defender and the defender turned his back. Early in my career I would see the end of something like this and flag it because all I saw was the result of the contact and make an assumption he was hit from behind. Far more often than not I would see the video and realize I was wrong. That's why you don't guess unless you saw the entire block including the action leading up to it.

In this example, the official who should be watching the action of the tackle is the one at the top of the screen. There is nothing else for him to watch and that is one of his initial keys. This should have been an easy get for him, and he likely gets the downgrade on this.

Officiating is as much about angles and keys as it is about proximity.
I reffed a bunch of football games this year and it definitely is not easy. There was one play that I remember being yelled at during the play for holding but the offensive player had the defender perfectly positioned that while I thought it was holding, I couldn't actually see the holding. I couldn't throw the flag due to having an angle where I couldn't see the foul.

Plus the higher you are above the play the easier it is to see everything, including penalties. The refs on the field definitely don't have that luxury.

I don't think it was. The defender was guarding/shadowing the QB until he was blocked in the back and taken out of position as the ball was thrown.

It's OK to not be OK.

That could have been a factor as well, although the player blocked was attempting to cover an eligible receiver. The officials on that side may not have been thinking about that at the time. They may have just been looking for train wrecks (i.e. personal fouls, unsportsmanlike conduct) on the back side. That could also be why they passed on it. If the ball never goes this way that is not a foul because no advantage was gained.

Indy, what are your thoughts about putting some of the refs at a higher vantage point off the field?

Agree. Looked like the Bison DT was actually touching TC and starting to run with him, then he got smoked in the back. The white hat actually stepped backwards, as the DT was launched, seemed to be looking right at the foul.

I believe a band member called in to the post game show on Friday and said a fiddle will be brought to Texas.
