Can only be one starter. You have to know the landscape at NDSU when you come. You can be Cole Davis, Esley Thorton, James Hendricks, or Derek McGinnis.

I'll bet the first 3 had a better time than the last.

I don't think that's fair to McGinnis. Not like he was going to be the backup, he'd have been down the depth chart and he might not have had the athleticism to switch to defense. I get we all love the stories of guys sticking it out with little to no playing time, but some kids just want to play the game they love and see the field. Nothing wrong with transferring to a smaller school to see the field and have some fun. Also nothing wrong with sticking it out at NDSU on the sidelines.

Correct, but not at the beginning of the season. His HOF bio says he started "early" in his Freshman year. The 1983 roster shows Bentrim played in 8 games and Dale Hammerschmidt in 2.

Yes I was actually at his first game and was about 3 games into that season. Also, remember Morton chewing Tyrone Braxton ass on sidelines during that game.. I was about 14 years old sitting on north side of Dakota field on s clear sunny Saturday afternoon.
