I do wonder, though, why a program like UNI is able to have a higher tier MBB program than NDSU. Seems like a fair comparison, but I’m definitely not an expert on this topic. Anyone have thoughts?

NDSU TO FBS. HAVEN'T WE WON ENOUGH?
In part because:
There are almost 2 million people within 100 miles of Cedar Rapids and 18 million within 200 miles.
They pay thier HC's, currently around $900,000-1,000,000 a year.
Compared to NDSU:
There are 670,000 people within 100 miles and 2 million people within 200 miles.
Richman gets about $230,000 to 250,000 a year.
Not much we can do about the population, but, when you can attract and keep a good HC and have that much population around, you're gong to do pretty good.
EDIT: In case you are wondering where I got those numbers from. http://www.statsamerica.org/radius/big.aspx
In college athletics you generally get what you pay for and UNI spends more than double what NDSU spends on men's basketball. UNI spends $3.6M on men's basketball and $4.3M on football. NDSU spends $1.7M on basketball and $6M on football. NDSU is a football school and UNI is a basketball school and where each spends their money reflects that.
You can look up that kind of stuff for football/basketball at any public university here: https://ope.ed.gov/athletics/#/compare/search
Thanks for the input. Seems like we need to put our money where our mouth is if we want to elevate.

North Dakota State, a football team the big boys of college football should avoid like the plague, helped christen a $90 million renovation to Snyder Family Stadium — including a statue of famed Kansas State coach Bill Snyder himself — by taking a sledgehammer to the place.Bob Lutz, The Wichita Eagle, August 30th, 2013
yea, so you need a PRODUCT that is ENTERTAINING to bring MORE FANS into the stands to create MORE REVENUE.
and you know, produce 1 big win in 5 years would help too.
