Otzelberger at SDSU is making $350k base this year and just signed an extension where I don't believe the financials were disclosed but I'd assume he's getting a hefty bump since his current contract was his on-hire contract. NDSU MBB has had a higher attendance average than SDSU MBB the last 2 years before this (although that may change this year). Then again SDSU takes their basketball program seriously and I'm still not convinced that NDSU does looking at the year-in-year-out schedule each school puts together.

If NDSU wants to compete at the top of the Summit League they're going to have to pony up for a coach. Maybe not 500k range but probably right around the same range as what Entz was just hired at as head football coach (guessing that's around 300k for a base).

5000-6000 people in seats for 20 freakin games!! that's $2 million in revenue.

NDSU definitely needs to up the level of support for the BB programs. I would rather have paid Saul more to stay then pay an unproven coach a big sum to start out. And nothings a given just by increasing the money spent either. Look no further than NE or UNI.

Curious what you think a "UNI-type commitment to basketball" looks like? Coach's salary? Duration of contract? Packed venue? Identity as a basketball school? I'm not sure that I would say that UNI has any of those things. Mostly, they have a coach who is very comfortable in his situation (but not with the kind of comfort that makes him complacent), and an AD who isn't displeased. However, the mediocrity of the last few years would seem to cause more of a stir if there was truly a "commitment to basketball."

Just did a quick check of the UNI basketball attendance.

    2018-19 (thus far): 3,539. Won-Lost (thus far): 11-15.
    2017-18: 4,090. Won-Lost: 16-16.
    2016-17: 4,536. Won-Lost: 14-16.
    2015-16: 5,379. Won-Lost: 23-13.

Cy.....Other than the obvious W-L slipping under .500 after the 15-16 season, are there any other factors that are causing this downward trend?

What the fans want isnt necessarily what the admin wants. Same situation here.

A Tim Miles hire would be a transcending hire that would ignite the fan base and alumni unlike virtually any realistic candidate available. He is also the one hire who immediately puts butts in the $eats in the form of season tickets. The success of NDSU basketball will determine where we land in any future realignment. We have had the best run in DI college football maybe ever and it hasn't done a damn thing to improve our conference home. We are still stuck in a low major conference. Finally, with the Dome situation being what it is, Any future growth in the Athletic department will have to come from Men's basketball. If Mile's is the guy to lead that transformation, then we have find a way to get the deal done. If UNI did it with Jacobson, then we can do it here.

I like where your head is at and totally agree about basketball being the area to expand Bison athletics.

all true, but FB would have to give up funds, would donors go for that?

They seem to lose out every year to the likes of Pittsburgh State, NW Missouri, and even Emporia State in most sports.

Kansas University has a tradition of allowing their senior players to play a game in their home state (or with a home state team). His senior year, they played against UN_. I'm not sure if he chose UN_ or if it was the schedule worked out to play the suzies.

They would hire Walthall over Boschee not only because of his power 5 experience but the NSIC is a better conference than what Boschee coaches in. Augustana will be a middle of the pack of the Summit team right away. Mankato, and Moorhead would likely be similar but obviously will never make the move up.
