    Dear Vet:

    In appreciation for all of your hard work on this thread, and for the solid C- work with all the math that it so entailed (which is actually a good grade for you in this subject, I'm guessing ), here is your present from me.

    I debated whether or not to give it to you now, on Countdown Day 5, so that you could savor it for the full week ……………………. or to secretly dump it on you late Friday, Countdown Day 1, so that you would only have to tolerate it for a short period of time. In my naked optimism, I chose the former.

    Gimme Bison (or Vet's Long Off-Season)

    Ooh, a long off-season
    Grew longer by the day
    I started going crazy
    Forced Momma to put me away
    but .............

    Ease ......., children
    I hear it's on it's way
    I hear it's on it's way
    The Herd ......., children
    They're fifty days away
    They're fifty days awaaaay

    Ooh, the storm is brewing
    I'm antsy day by day
    If I can't watch my Bison
    Dear Momma, all hell will pay
    but......

    Comfort ........, children
    I think it's on it's way
    I think it's on it's way
    The Herd ......, children
    They're just 5 days away
    They're just 5 days awaaaay

    Tail ......gating
    I dream of Saturday
    Where all my friends come play

    Food ....... and liquor
    The grills are lit today
    My drink is on it's way

    Power ...... football
    Until I'm old and gray
    They always ought to plaaaaaaay

    Oooh, I feel that Thunder
    It struck me deep one day
    Oh Momma, where's my game shirt
    Suns up, we be on our way!
    cuz..........

    The Herd ......., children
    They're gonna play today!
    They're gonna play today!
    The Dome ........, children
    Can't hear a thing you say!
    Can't hear a thing you say!
    The Game ......, children
    Not gonna leave halfway!
    Put down the damn crochet!
    A Win ......, children
    That's all I got to say!
    That's all I got to saaaaaaaay!

    Loaf, thanks for your never-ending generosity and friendship. I know you don't throw out your musical rip-offs for just anyone. I did have my hopes up for cash. Since I am part Indian you have put me in the embarrassing position of having to give you gifts in return. I assume you have no interest in my daughter, I will need all my blankets in a few months for winter and I have no horses. However, I do have a couple of things to give you on Saturday.

    P.S. In spite of your frequent jabs about a few minor math mistakes (okay one was a whopper) I want you to know that I earned an "A" in my undergraduate math class as well as 12 hours of statistics for another degree. Get the Jagermeister and dip ready. Oh, and fire up the grill.

    This is the best!!! I was just looking at mine from last year and wishing I wasn't a plane ride away from this year's version. Sadly no business trips to Colorado this fall. Used the one you sent me home with all season and loved it. If you are in the Denver area definitly go to The Boardroom watch party! It's a great location and of course great company!

    Day 4 is finally here. That is 1, 2, 3, 4 days to go before the Mustangs enter the Dome for what is hopefully a good beatdown.

    Okay, following up on my rant from yesterday why do I really like football? Football is one of the ultimate team contact sports. One thing that I forgot to include in my day 10 and 9 openings about "What Really Bugs Vet" is commentators/experts/analysts making the observation that one team or the other is "being physical". That is the way the game is supposed to be played and the Bison certainly fit the bill. One of the keys to success is to wear the other team down by hitting them time and time again. In other words, smash mouth football. Nothing is more fun than watching the Bison line up and run up the middle again and again and teams like SHSU not being able, or not wanting, to do anything about it. Football is essentially a gladiator sport. Yes, basketball, baseball, and hockey can get physical from time to time and fights will break out, but in football, almost every player will hit or get hit on each and every play. I might be missing something but more players are injured in football than in any other sport. I don't enjoy or like it one bit when any player gets injured and for a short time at least I feel a little guilty about liking football so much. But let's face it, whether we want to admit it or not part of the things that attract a lot of us to the game is its inherent violence. That is by far not the only reason I like football and I'll wrap up this diatribe in the next two days on a more positive note.

    **The 4th Head coach at NDSU was A. L. Marshall (1904-1905) who had a 4-7-1 record (.375). From 1901 to 1907 NDAC Farmers had 4 perfect seasons: 1901, 7-0 (including 17-11 beating UN_); 1902, 2-0 (47-0 over UN_); 1906, 4-0 (32-4 beating UN_); and 1907, 4-0. Also in 1901, the Farmers beat the Minnesota JV squad 17-0. Insert Gopher jokes here. Perfect seasons have gotten a lot harder since then.
    **Frank Esposito in 1953 set the record for interceptions in a game with 4 against UNI.
    **The 1976 team set a playoff game record with 4 interceptions when they played Montana Stae. It was tied by the 1996 team against Truman State.
    **A.J. McNortan had 4 rushing touchdowns against Montana State in 2010 to rank #5 (tie) on the all-time single-game list.

    No discussion would be complete when talking about Bison players who wore #4 without including Ryan Smith (5-7, 175 pounds; 2010-2013). He played in 54 games and had 34 rushing attempts (271 yards, 8.5 average, 2 TD's) to go along with his 147 receptions (1,783 yards, 12.7 yards, 8 TD's). I can never think of Ryan without remembering "Hide Ryan" against SDSU in the 2012 playoffs. Crouching behind the offensive line he took a handoff from Jensen, hesitated for a few seconds and went around the left side untouched for a 32-yard score that gave the Bison a 14-3 lead. I was in my usual seats in the North end zone and had a good view of the play that was a thing of beauty. In addition, in his career, Ryan had 30 kick returns and (773 yards, 25.8 yards, and 1 TD) as well as 82 punt returns (945 yards and 3 TD's). Smith still holds several places in the top 5 spots in the Bison record books for his efforts:

    Game: Kick return of 100 yards (#1, tie) and an 85 yard punt return (#3, tie); Single-Season: Punt return yardage, 332 (#5) and 37 returns (#2); and Career: 945 yards (#1), 3 TD punt returns (#2, tie) and a 25.77 average on kick returns (#5).

    Ryan's best single-game efforts were:
    Rushing Attempts: 5, vs. Sam Houston State, 1-5-13
    Rushing Yards: 55, Furman, 12-7-13 (3 carries)
    Long Rush: 32, South Dakota State, 12-1-12
    Receptions: 8, at Kansas State, 8-30-13
    Receiving Yards: 111, South Dakota, 11-23-13 (4 receptions)
    Long Reception: 64, South Dakota, 11-23-13
    All-Purpose Yards: 172, Youngstown State, 10-6-12
    Punt Returns: 7, Robert Morris, 9-1-12
    Punt Return Yards: 146, Morgan State, 9-18-10 (5 returns)
    Longest Punt Return: 85, Missouri State, 10-12-13 (TD)
    Kickoff Returns: 3, South Dakota, 9-25-10; at UNI, 9-11-10
    Kickoff Return Yards: 100, at Indiana State, 10-26-13 (1 return)
    Longest Kickoff Return: 100, at Indiana State, 10-26-13 (TD)

    In addition, I want to highlight his many accolades:
    * 2012, 2013 All-Missouri Valley Football Conference Second Team Wide Receiver
    * 2011, 2012, 2013 All-Missouri Valley Football Conference Second Team Return Specialist
    * 2012, 2013 College Football Performance.com National Punt Returner of the Week
    * 2013 College Football Performance.com National Kickoff Returner of the Week
    * 2011, 2012, 2013 MVFC Special Teams Player of the Week
    * 2011, 2012 MVFC Commissioner’s Academic Excellence Award
    * 2010, 2013 MVFC Honor Roll
    * 2011, 2013 MVFC All-Academic Second Team
    * 2012 MVFC All-Academic Honorable Mention
    * 2013 NFF Hampshire Honor Society

    Todays #4 is Demitri Williams (5-11, 204-pound Senior). In 2015 he played as a true Freshman and just last week he was moved from wide receiver to running back, so the position shuffle, as well as number changes, continue for the Bison. There ought to be a federal law prohibiting this just like there is for almost everything else. Coach Klieman said just yesterday that there is a possibility that Dimitri will redshirt this season. In his 40 games to date, he has 24 carriers (174 yards, 7.3 average, 1 TD. Jet Sweep anyone?) and 20 receptions (246 yards, 12.3 average). Williams also has played on special teams where he has been credited with 19 tackles (13 unassisted). He has proven to be a very versatile player and even has 21 kick returns (451 yards, 21.5 average).

    We are rolling right along into day 3 with a full head of steam. It is only about 72 hours from now before the day 1 post gets on line. IT IS ABOUT TIME FOR FOOTBALL. You may think we are totally done with The Countdown To Cal Poly

    Thanks, Vet. Anyone have a video of Dimitri blowing up that SHSU (or was it Wooford) kick returner in last years' semi? That was a slobberknocker of a hit.

    Yep. I was just thinking the same thing. I am way too excited to focus on anything else.

    Good thing it was not in the NFL and great example of how you have to lead with your head to some degree when making contact even when hitting with a shoulder pad.
