Objective measures do not always tell the entire story. They have been a mediocre team that plays in the pathetic Southland Conference and for the most part, has played weak teams out of their conference. This has allowed them to rack up wins by large margins and they are rewarded by the polls that in turn results in their getting high seeds in the playoffs. The result is an opportunity to make a deep run until they meet the better teams like JMU or NDSU where, with the exception of 2011, they get destroyed. That is why in five of the last seven years they have had the opportunity to lose to the eventual champion. They are 1-4 against FBS teams with their lone victory in 2011 by three points in overtime against a University of New Mexico team that went 1-11. In their other four games, they lost by an average of 33 points. Keeler himself had some frank comments after last years debacle against NDSU when he made a statement to the effect that if they were ever going to win a title they were going to have to play tougher competition. He also said that it was their boys against our men. They are not only overrated, they are soft.
