71' 0" for Payton today setting yet another NDSU Indoor SHOT PUT record. (at the Mark Colligan Invitational at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln)

This is 4 1/2 feet further than anyone else in the country thus far.

3.5" from the all time NCAA indoor record. Read that again, this is an NDSU athlete, 3.5" from the all time NCAA Division 1 indoor record.

Also the 3rd best toss in collegiate indoor history! This is ridiculous what he is doing this year.

Meters? We need more American Exceptionalism in track and field so I know how far this is. Is it around 400 feet?

So are indoor distances usually quite a bit better than outdoor?

Outdoor numbers tend to be higher by a foot or 2.

Good example of that is the world record holder for both the indoor and outdoor shot is held by the same guy, Randy Barnes.

His indoor record is: 74' 4"
His outdoor record is 75' 10"

    Also....the NCAA indoor record is 71' 3 1/2" and the outdoor record is 72' 2 1/2".

If you look at the NDSU top 10 performances in each, you'll see the same pattern.

    I wonder why that is.
