Does he have a legit shot? Absolutely. I don't think three is any question on talent, ability to throw. There is a mental component once one gets into the National Meet, people can be intimidated and therefore underperform, get nervous, etc. And there is the issue of whether someone is on that day, people have off days. If Payton get the mental part down - goes to the NCAAs knowing he can win, then he likely will.
Freshman Kari Wolfe (Javelin) - threw 170' during the season. Threw 138' at NCAA west regional yesterday. Everyone was off their personal bests yesterday to some degree, but this was more than the usual. It could be that Kari got sick, got food poisoning, and so on. But if not those things, then I would guess she just had an off day or the mental pressure (wanting to do well, but not having the confidence yet, not really believing she could do it) weighed on her. She is young, she'll be back and get mentally tougher. I think people tend to underestimate how much the mental has to do with performing well in these bigger meets. Let's see how Payton does. He is a senior and he was there last year, and had Renner as a teammate, so likely learned from him.

Payton throws 64'4" for 10 place and does not make the finals of the Shot tonight in Eugene. He looked rightfully disappointed but had a great season with some monster throws.

After switching techniques from glide to spin, Otterdahl was crowned Class 2A boys shot put state champion Friday morning. The Rosemount junior turned in a throw of 58 feet, 7.25 inches on the opening day of the state meet at Hamline University’s Klas Field.

    WOW!

Payton Otterdahl shattered 2 NDSU indoor records at the Dakota Classic hosted by NDSU this week.

He won the Weight Throw with a launch of 77' 1".
This bested his own school record set last year of 68' 9 3/4".

He came up just an inch short of 70 feet in the shot put. His throw of 69' 11" was nearly 7 feet better than Alex Renner's 2016 record of 63' 0 1/4".

    These are MONSTER NUMBERS!!

Crazy good effort in the Shot! There are only a handful of throwers in the world that can throw 70'! Hopefully Payton can do this consistently this year. Would be awesome to have our first T&F National Champion!

Payton won the shot put yesterday with a throw of 68' 7". This is 16 inches less than his record throw in December, but still 25 inches farther than the second best collegiate throw this year (Jordan Geist of Arizona has thrown 66' 6").

Video of Otterdahl throwing the shot put yesterday. The incredible coach Justin St. Clair standing behind the netting over Payton's left shoulder.

The Otter's technique and speed are just amazing.

This mark represents the 6th best in the nation in 2018.

For now....at least, Otterdahl has recorded the top throw in the world for 2019 (indoor shot put).

He has trimmed some weight. Saw him a couple weeks ago at the indoor meet and his physique is impressive.
