Payton will be throwing the SHOT PUT at the Prefontaine Classic in Oregon this Sunday.

There will be 9 competitors in this event including University of Texas standout Ryan Crouser.

Otterdahl has the lowest PB in the field (21.37 meters). New Zealand's Thomas Walsh has the best PB in the group (22.67 meters).

    That is terrific.

I see that he has also signed up for the US Track and Field Championships (July 25-28). He has a throw of 21.81 in his registration or entry (whatever it is called). The 21.81 is his personal best (PB). Indoor throws count, this was his PB indoors.

Otterdahl at the Prefontaine Classic this coming Sunday ...
    This is significant. Consider:
    a) Roesler had an excellent indoor season; this is a meet affiliated with her former school; she did not make the 800m list
    b) this is not regular shot-put event. It is a Diamond League shot-put event; only he best of the best generally get invited to these.
    c) He is the only collegian invited. Jordan Geist went on the record saying how he was the best in the collegiate ranks; he is not invited.
Comentia (Georgia) was a national outdoor champ last year; he is not invited. Etc.
    d) The other shot-putters in this Diamond League shot-put are likely professionals.

That Otterdahl is going to compete in the Pre-Classic made the news on Track and Field News magazine (on-line version); it is that big a deal.
However ... it received no mention on gobison.com, the NDSU athletics website.
It received no mention on inforum.com, though it seems to me that this is as or more newsworthy (sports-wise) than a lot of other things.
    This is unfortunate.

Pretty ridiculous that there is no mention of this locally.
Payton has earned the status of a world class T & F athlete.

A good thing ... Payton has not yet uncorked outdoors like he did indoors. Weather may have played a role; the Bison T & F teams did not have a really good weather day during the crucial part of the season - mid-April to mid-May when they are supposed to be peaking. Cold, cold & windy, cool and raining, are not conducive to great times, distances, etc. So the good thing ... he has two opportunities to unload a great heave, that (if tradition holds) will count toward NDSU school records - the Pre-Classic and the USA T & F Championships at the end of July. It would be great to see him get in the zone for either or both of these meets.

Next year, perhaps we will see Moton at the USATF Championships. She was close this year (and she is only a Freshman at NDSU !).
After that it might Otterdahl the Younger.

Payton takes 8th out of the 9 throwers going 67' 6 1/4". So, just over 2 feet better than his NCAA Outdoor Championships best.

Ryan Crouser finished 2nd throwing a best of 72' 9".

Brazil's Darlan Romani won the event with a huge distance of 74' 2 1/4". He was the only competitor to go beyond 73 feet and he did that on 4 of his 6 throws.

He set a PB, a FB, and Diamond League record...……..and had better not hope they don't make him pee in a cup later today.....kinda joking.....<he's really, really, really large>.

Payton just punched his ticket to Tokyo for Team USA!

Lifetime best shot throw of 71'11"! Good for 3rd at the US Olympic trials.
