Friend of mine went in early to watch warm ups and claimed #22 Wegner the backup punter was booming punts like well over 60yds(assuming was with the wind). Anyone else see that?

I wasn't in there early enough but I've noticed that in halftime warmups for home games this year when the specialists come out early to warm up. His leg just seems more lively than Koonce's does. That said it's easy to do that when there's no rush and other variables like a snap or wind to worry about.
I saw them warming up at halftime (yes, it was with a slight wind). We were sitting way in the corner, so couldn't see exact yardage. Wegner seemed to kick a much tighter spiral than Koonce (often his just don't spiral). Seemed to be quite a bit further than Koonce's, and at least as high. I'd hope he will get even stronger, since he's just a RFr.
I'd think he had to be nervous as hell coming into a tight game with the lack of experience.

Won't name names, but a D player told me after the game that he was very vocal to the coaching staff about covering the fake. That said, if we get the ball back we likely have to punt away anyway, and it just wasn't our day on special teams.

As frustrating as the kick distances were...if you watch the first punt return JMU had that set up their field goal both Cox and Deluca missed tackles right after the return man caught the ball.
Our coverage in general was poor...if anything we should have been direct kicking out of bounds. Even if it doesn’t land out of bounds you at least cut off half the field for guys to run wild.

@Bold: I am not a big fan of putting starters on KO/P coverage in NC game when they haven't been doing so all year (don't recall was Cox on P-returns this year). First, it kinda becomes an art-form in a way over the course of a year for those that have been on those teams. Second, after just giving everything you had on a D series, you're effing gassed. Yes, I have some experience on this from the old days--before you go tell me to GFM.

Agree on all accounts.
I would think that if our punt coverage was suspect all year then a desperation move would be to play a bunch of starters. That wasn’t the case in our situation.
And their motive behind the move completely backfired...as not only did we give up a shit load of “hidden yards” but it almost cost us the game.
Not to mention there’s probably 6-8 guys on those SP units that have busted their tails to get on the field anyway possible, and then you take away their opportunity to play in the biggest game of the war....makes no sense.

You know its not a sin to admit that the Bison were not great at every facet of the game this year. I was down on special teams all year in comparison to the Offense and Defensive sides of the ball. How pissed would we be if Cox got injured on kickoff coverage this year and didn't play in Championship? We cant thump our chest all day long regarding how talented and deep the Bison are and not be somewhat critical of our special teams. Aside from piss poor teams early in the year, I cant say special teams had a lot of special moments for a talent laden team. I truly believe that with better special teams, especially a decent punter, we add another 9 pts to the win difference against JMU in field goals alone. We could not flip the field even when punting from our own 25-35 yard lines. Oh yeah, when the wind is in your face half the game, that means its at your back the other half!!!!
