Well it does give them the right to be an asshole. Whats surprising is the number of people who took advantage of it. If people cant figure this out we are wasting our breath.

exactly freedom of speach does not absolve one from the consequences of what one expressed. once one chooses to express themselves the consequences and or fallout are on them. bitching about it just makes them look naive and entitled.

Many people I have talked to about the anthem and the flag do not know the story, I am not here to educate, but many people should look up why when and how the Star Spangled Banner was written. The whole song is intended to the valor of the US military and their effort to make sure that the flag stayed up at all costs. The national anthem is a stand alone moment at any event that it is played at, it is not tied to any other purpose than to thank those who served and to honor anyone who fought for the freedom of our country against overwhelming odds. The national anthem and the flag never stood for racism of any sort. So to choose that moment when we are asked to honor them, people are asked to face the flag and place their hands over their hearts and remove headgear (that part is directly related to the military). If you are not comfortable with those acts, then out of respect at least stand and remain silent. Go to a hockey game for christ sake and everyone still stays standing for the Canadian anthem even if they are a US citizen and vis versa for our anthem at those events. I have a very hard time believing that any kneeler picked the moment they decided to take a knee for any other reason that knowing they would get the most attention based on the reaction. And now it is impossible to retract because they would come across as weak.

It is the warrior, not the poet
who has given us freedom of speach

It is the warrior not the minister
Who has given us freedom of religion.

It is the warrior, not the reporter
Who has given us freedom of the press.

It is the warrior, not the campus organizer
Who has given us freedom to protest.

It is the warrior, not the lawyer
Who has given us the right to a fair trial.

It is the warrior, not the politician
Who has given us the right to vote.

It is the warrior who gave you the right to direspect the flag.

However, before you do so, remember.... It is the Warrior who salutes the flag,
    Who serves beneath the flag,
And whose coffin is draped by the flag.

The fact that there are consequences doesn't nullify the first amendment. The players have the right to do what they want, owners and the public have the right to react how they want. But which player that kneeled has bitched about the consequences? The only one's bitching are people that think freedom only applies to things they approve....
