    Default Newman Outdoor Field Net

Went to the opening night Redhawks game and they have put a net up pretty much around the whole infield. There are large posts in front of both the 3rd base red seats and the GA bleachers that supports the new net. It is also seems higher now as it goes up to about the bottom of the suite level. I am not a fan, feels like you are watching baseball in a cage. I can't imagine what the players feel like. If you are planning on going and sitting in the the GA section be sure to get there early so you don't have to sit behind the post.

Kind of an unnecessary evil. I was at my first game ever when the Bison played the Gophers a few years ago and someone ripped a foul down 3rd base and let's say the guys hand swelled up to the size of his face. At least it didnt hit his daughter

I haven't seen the new set up but some nets are really good and others are crap.

As long as my electrical box next to the light pole out in right center isn't occupied so I can shag home runs from darryl motley, Johnny knox, Lance migueta and Chris coste...I don't care about the net

Get used to it. You'll see it at pretty much any place that can afford it from now on.

I've been in a couple MLB parks this year. Baltimore hasn't changed their netting. Washington has extended their nets but at an angle terminating at the far end of the dugout so there are no posts or other obstructions.

The large poles are unnecessary, most parks use thin poles or poles just at the ends or no poles at all.

As in the case of Iowa Central Community College baseball field of Fort Dodge, Iowa. You want to feel in a cage???? You ain't felt nothing yet. I was there to umpire a double header. Their netting extends at least eighty feet in the air, half way down left and right field. It's the biggest, highest, largest netting you will ever see in your life. When I asked the coach of Iowa Central the reason for the hugh net, his response was, "We had to." What do you mean, "You had to."? "It was court order." The home owners association took the college to court. Apparently, the home owners were tired of foul balls landing on the street and denting cars, breaking windshields, and damaging the siding of their homes. Imagine that!!! The judge ruled in the home owners' favor. In fact, a few foul balls (not many) still go over the net, If the foul balls land on a home owners lawn, shaggers can't step on the lawn to retrieve the balls. The homes, apparently, were there before the field was built. True story.

Some of the fields in the top leagues in Korea and Japan have fan protection from foul pole to foul pole. People freaked out when the NHL added netting behind the goals, too. It turned out to be a big fat nothing burger. Extended fan protection at baseball fields is happening, people will get over it, it will be fine.

They wouldn't have to put up nets like that if everybody would just put their phone down and watch what's happening on the field
