Something coming into play here for you, I think, is the fact that NDSU won 12 straight from 1981 to 1992. Therefore they never actually lost the trophy, so it was likely that it wasn't a big deal that it was retained.
I just did some digging around and found a picture of NDSU celebrating in with the nickel in 2000. This was after UN_ had it for a couple of years. They seem pretty happy...

I am not trying to start anything, but in spite of the history, I would be very surprised if any of the NDSU players today care anything about the nickel.

As a former player who played for Nickel, I could give two fucks what they do/are doing, with it. It’s actually laughable.
