Academia types are completely lost in the world of reality and common sense.

Purdue-Fort Wayne University...athletically known as Fort Wayne
Indiana University-Indianapolis....athletically known as Indianapolis

Doesn't work. There is already a University of Indianapolis that plays sports(D2). And PUFW is already known athletically as Fort Wayne(and will continue to be known as that despite this reorganization).
