So they're on par with us. We could easily do G5 if our regional rivals could move as well. I find myself watching MVFC over P5 games every weekend, there's got to be a market, albeit small, for us to fit in at the next level.

The school in South Bend has literally, a religious following and a brand that got built 100 years ago when the football universe was young and forming. Also in a state with trash for football competition, and an hour from the 3rd biggest city in the United States, which is another state with trash for football competition. Also rather convenient to have a nickname that one of the biggest immigrant ethnic groups could identify with. Notre Dame couldn't develop into what they are now if they tried to do it again today. They had a stupid amount of good fortune that turned Notre Dame into Notre Dame.
There isn't a school today that can pull that off, including the school that did manage to. Could say the same about Green Bay Packer football. Weird situations from 75-100 years ago led to some outliers that don't make sense. It doesn't make sense to strive to be the exceptionally weird outliers.

As I and a few others have pointed out before, the "split" already happened when the CFP became a thing with only a four team bracket and the NCAA agreed to allow the P5 conferences to have autonomy (https://www.espn.com/college-sports/...er-conferences). Both came around/started in 2014. Unfortunately, the G5 conferences don't want want to admit they're on the outside looking in. I know this from my personal conservation at a SportsCorp Luncheon with the Mountain West front office personal in the Summer of 2016 (this was the same time they laughed nearly hysterically about my claim that NDSU would be beating Iowa).
In regards to moving up, read this article: https://www.espn.com/college-footbal...ence-shuffling
The FBS conferences are all about viewership and how their content is being viewed by fans. That's why this commercial is a very promising indicator about the future of NDSU football:

Excellent post Chris. The gears are turning, but slowly. Surely our championship moving to ABC is more than coincidence. When that second tier door opens, we'll already be positioned to elbow our way in. You've seen first hand the insecurity MWC folks have about us, similar to Farley lobbying to keep us out of the MVFC. They know we can challenge them on the field, and for eyeballs and the money that goes with it. We'll need our regional peers at this level to move in sync with us.
