I think they said they would do that now in the first 2 rounds. I could see them avoiding potential rematches in round 2.

OK I hadn't seen that. I remembered it as being the first round which really didn't make sense to me because it was always the second round that created rematches.

1. Can't overload teams from one conference in one side of the bracket.
2. Teams who played in non-conference are discouraged from meeting again in round 1 but they may still play anyway if splitting them results in an added flight.

That is the extent of the new rules.

When Culhane and JJ interviewed the committee chairman on the radio last week, I thought he said they now have the ability to add a flight in the first round (which is how they can avoid regionalization). It stuck with me because it was the only useful thing he said...

They can add 1 flight in order to move teams from the same conference to the other half of the bracket.
They can't add a flight to avoid rematches in the 1st round.
