Jeremy Nygaard's (Twins Daily) thumbnail sketch of Juan Gamez:
Gamez batted .197/.268/.287 this season, 0 HR, 18 RBIRound 31 (933rd overall): Juan Gamez, C, North Dakota State
A stocky catcher with a strong arm, Gamez will need to improve with the bat
At .197 BA, the scout who drafted Gamez must like something about him,
such as being a strong defensive catcher.
Am wondering if he will get signed by the Twins. Anyone know?
Is it possible he is a backup plan in case other catchers Minnesota drafted do not sign?
2nd round pick is a high school player - Ben Rortvedt from Verona Area High School (WI). Most likely will sign.
9th round pick - senior catcher from Cal Berkeley - most likely will sign
17th & 40th round picks are high school catchers, no guarantees there (unless Twins have a pre-draft understanding in place)
20th round pick is a community college pick, could sign
24th round pick is from Michigan State, but only a junior, tougher to sign
So hopefully for Gamez, the Twins need another bullpen catcher for rookie league Ft Myers. Great facilities there, I can think of worse places to be for your summer job......

NDSU TO FBS. HAVEN'T WE WON ENOUGH?
Don't be surprised to see the twins try him on the bump. He pitched some in summer ball in the west coast league. Has a big arm hitting 93 before.
Twins Daily showing Juan Gamez as having agreed to sign with the Twins.
Congrats again!
Didn't see this until now. Congrats!

Juan Gamez was assigned to Minnesota's Gulf Coast League rookie team (entry level). The team is based at the Ft Myers training complex that the major league team also uses during spring training. Gamez has been in one game at catcher so far for the Twins who are 2-2 on the season. He was 0-4 in the game.
Ben Rortvedt is also on the roster and should get the majority of playing time at catcher. He was this year's 2nd round draft pick for the Twins out of a Wisconsin high school. There are 5 catchers on the rookie league roster right now, with lots of bullpen & practice action going on with the large, rookie league roster. (20 pitchers currently on the roster)
Juan Gamez with his first professional hit, a single, in yesterday's game.
He was also 1-2 in dealing with attempted base stealers.

GCL Orioles defeat GCL Twins 3-0.
Twins now 2-3 in their season.
It was a Summit League battery yesterday for the Twins'
Gulf Coast rookie team - C Juan Gamez (NDSU) and
SRHP Tyler Fox (Nebraska Omaha). Minnesota signed Fox
as an undrafted free agent this summer. Fox with 5 shutout innings, 4 SO, in 2 games has a 2.08 ERA.
The Twins are 6-5 now. Gamez hitting .182
Was 0-2 in this game with a walk and a run scored.

The Twins did move Gamez to pitcher about halfway through the GCL season. He also went to the Instructional League to work on it. Throws hard.
