How is it that Morgan Milbrath runs 54.21 at the Summit Championships but isn't a qualifier for the NCAA regionals? (the 32nd best time in the west region) If she were to time machine herself back to her freshman year of high school, her state meet 400 meter finals time of 53.31 would put at 15th in this year's west rankings.

And, how did Erin Teschuk go from 4:15.30 in the 1500 meters earlier this outdoor season winning the Stanford Invitational (which would rank her 6th in the west region and 10th nationally), to a Summit League title at 4:25.96 (missing the regional cut-off)

The gobison article said Erin is only competing at steeplechase in the NCAAs because she feels it's her best chance.

    That's the part that I don't understand.
During the indoor season all of the hype was that she was among the nation's elite in the 1500. In fact, she ran 4:14.45 before outdoor.

In the 3,000 meter steeplechase she's ranked #27 in the west and #49 overall.

    Milbrath qualified in the 400m.

per this M. Milbrath is 37 in the Western Region in the 400m.
    http://www.rtspt.com/ncaa/d1outdoor1...men_review.htm

and nationally she is 102nd per this:
    https://www.tfrrs.org/lists/1683.htm...nd=11&gender=f

She was in the top 48 in the West in the 400m, so she qualified. But she also qualified in the 400mH. And NDSU's 4 x 400m relay qualified, and Milbrath is one of the runners. Of these three, she and the coaches decided she will be doing the 4 x 400m relay and 400mH - they give her the best chance of making All American and the best chance of NDSU scoring points.

She qualified in 3 events - 1500m, 5000m, and 3000m Steeplechase. She chose one - the 3000m Steeple.

I think she has only raced one of Steeplechase outdoors, so it will be interesting - with so little racing time one runs the risk of timing being off on getting over the steeples and for the water jump. I wish her the best. If she is on, has a good day, she could be natl champ.

Pretty disappointing NCAA regionals in the throws so far (Th and Fr AM).

None of the men qualified in the Hammer Throw to advance the NCAA finals (in two weeks). Conrad Schwarzkopf finished 14th - threw about a foot shorter than his PB (203 vs 204 and change). Top 12 advance. Except for the leader, who threw a PB by 10 feet, the throws were about 10-20 feet shorter than what the throwers had for PBs on tfrrs.org. Given how the other throwers did, Conrad seems to have had a decent day.

No women advanced in the javelin, though NDSU had a strong entrant in Rosenau. She threw 10 feet below her best in the javelin (171 vs 161 today), finished 13th. Top 12 advance. I looked over each of these. Of the top 12 all of the top throwers on tfrrs.org threw on average about 10 feet below their season best, and they all threw this morning. Only three of the top 12 had personal bests - and all these came from the rounds that threw on Th afternoon. One entrant threw a huge PB to make the Top 12. I suspect weather played a role in the relatively short throws.

Probably no one feeling worse than them. Damn.

Good job by Mortimer and Teschuk - Men's Javelin and Women's 3000M Steeplechase.

Both advanced to the NCAA finals.

Women's Hammer is now done - another close but 'not in' effort. Weimerskirch was 17th, threw pretty close to her PB (198 ft vs 196 ft). To make Top 12 she needed about 200 ft, which would best NDSUs school record of 199'-0". She is a junior, has another year to make it.

    Added in an edit:
Just noticed, the women's 4 x 400m finished 13th .... top 12 qualify and advance to the finals in two weeks. Adding to the 'close but no go' woes. They missed by about 3 tenths of a second from getting the 12th and last spot. This is the 3rd Bison finish at 13th or 14th place in the West Regionals this year. Bright spot however is that this was their best time this year. Three of the runners are coming back next year. Anyone know ... does NDSU have a 4th strong 400m runner in the shadows?

Renner qualified in the shot put, so another positive - he threw nearly equal to his personal best (PB) at 61 versus 62 feet (and change).

Although I wish a few more Bison would have made it to the finals (and that there would not have been so many 13th and 14th place finishers, adding to those from last year), it seems to me all three of the Bison T & F athletes who made it to the finals have a good chance of making All-American. A few more All-Americans would be great accomplishment.

NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships start this week.

    NDSU QUALIFIERS:

Alex Renner qualified in the shot put. At the West Regional he threw 61'-8 1/4". 7 guys threw further. The top throw in the west was by Nicholas Scarvelis from UCLA at 66'-4 1/4"

The top mark in the East Regional was 66'-3 1/4". Overall, Renner's toss is the 13th best going into the championships.

Incredibly, 5 of the top 40 throws in the west regional were by NDSU athletes!

Joining Renner on the men's list of NCAA finals qualifiers is Mattie Mortimore. He had the 7th best JAVELIN throw out of the west at 231'-2". Combining the marks in the East Region, Mortimore's effort was the nation's 12th best.

Just 1 qualifier on the women's side. Senior Erin Teschuk had the second best qualifying time in the West Region in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. Her time of 10:02.26. On the downside for Erin, 10 women in the East Region had faster times making her time the 12th best going into the Championships. But, on the plus side, she's capable of much better. Last year she PRd at the NCAA Outdoor Championships finishing 5th at 9:42.15. NO QUALIFIER in either region this spring clocked in within 9+ seconds of that.

What does it take to All-American in track and has anyone done it in the DI era?
