    Default School song

    http://www.inforum.com/news/3955350-...ral-references

Echoes of Kipling in his imperial phase... except, Kipling was usually a lot less flowery... surprised "flowery" isn't in the lyrics as "ere the flow'ry fields are reap-ed" or something.

Gotta say that I never liked the lyrics despite the fact that the song has a good beat and is easy to dance to.

I'll just highlight in red what I don't like:

    Hushed upon the boundless prairies
    Is the bison’s thund’ring tread,*
And the red man passes with him
    On his spoilers’ bounty fed.**
But the Norse, the Celt and Saxon
With their herd increase***, and find
Mid these fields of green and yellow****

    Plenty e’en***** for all mankind.

    * Disrespecting our own mascot?
** a) "Red man?" b) WTF does the rest of that lyric even mean?
*** a) a little too Aryan brotherhood for me b) But, wait, not even a shout-out to Germans?
**** I'll take my fields in green and gold, please
    ***** E'en? Ser'sly?

Truth be told, I'd like a new school song... once set to the tune of a German drinking song (not an English one) or something with better lyrics. Keep the old song around after ditching the verse.

Damn it, I want something that Vikings wouldn't mind singing (lots of alliteration, lots of metaphor, and a pause in the middle of the line so you can drink your mead.

Ouside of the third verse, there is nothing offensive about it.

What confuses me is this: "He has also asked the provost and vice president for student affairs to form a group of students, faculty and staff to study the song and 'offer recommendations on the balance between our history and tradition of the song with contemporary concerns for its appropriateness.'"

Does that mean there would be an option for it to no longer be performed? It would be stupid if it was an option because only the first (and technically fourth) verse is ever sung/played. Basically the only reason a person would know more than the first verse is if they were in the band/choir or saw it published.

Being of Norse and Celtic heritage, I resent being lumped in with those dirty Swedes and Irish.

Don't like the red man reference.

But no problems with Germans not being referenced.

We were pretty notorious for being insular, anti-education, drunkards at the time the song was written.

"But besides that, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you enjoy the play?"

Third verse has got to go... and I think all he's talking about is getting the 3rd verse out of official stuff going forward. Other than that, while the song it pretty to listen to, it's horrible for the average guy to sing.

    Haha tuche.

I have no problem with the verse being removed. But if he wants to have it rewritten, that's stupid.

I would really like a new song.

    Maybe something techno-80's.

Quick, change the song before we get into trouble with the NCAA. Maybe we can rip this one off.
The only reason some people get lost in thought is because it's unfamiliar territory.
