I know it was partly in jest about the economy travel, but I don't like even seeing that suggested as a "necessary evil." That is bullshit; $8K for a biz class flight to India is NOTHING to be ashamed of. Simply explain this is the industry standard for business travel; make it clear in policy this is allowed for international travel, and be done with it. Anyone who thinks Dr. Brsciani would not approve biz class travel for a big money faculty member at NDSU to present at an international conference, does not understand the business/faculty world. (Not to mention, the researcher would be paying for his travel out of the research funds he/she generated.)

That is a typical price for an airline business class ticket. It was for the ticket. Again, very standard price; actually good price for a trip all the way to India, and this was NOT first class. Can't stress that enough as I felt the Forum was reckless in how they wrote that.

Usually, but not always, a true lay flat bed to sleep in. Decent food and wine. It really is about the seat bed so you don't end up feeling like roadkill.

And for kicks and giggles, just priced out a a 5-7 night stay on Delta in the next month, and the absolute best fare was $5270, but many of the fares exactly about what he paid.

Somewhere to sit without your knees in your chest and your elbows pinned to your ribs. Enough room to open your laptop and get something done while you're in the air for 24 hours. Perhaps a fully reclining seat so you can actually sleep.
