Another lame straw man argument. First, there are plenty of examples of non-P5 schools playing in even the biggest bowls, so Detroit would hardly be a requisite fate for NDSU. Second, since it was the Goophers playing in the Quick Lane Bowl in Detroit a few weeks ago, are you implying that it is somehow superior to compete in the FCS than compared to the Big 10? I'm sorry, that is a really dumb take.
There are so many more dynamics than just being competitive.
1. 44 more scholarships. Actually it probably works out to luke 48 because of the way other sports are broken down. This becomes real money, there is a minimum of number of sports a D1 program has to offer, so it isn't like you can make a couple of cuts and get under the line.
2. New stadium. The stadium capacity had to be a real issue addressed if there was a move up. The Fargo dome would probably be fine during the building process, but needs more seats. This isn't even debatable.
3. Well the extra revenue surpass the extra expenses. It has to be profitable. The one good thing is NDSU is not like a lot of these other schools moving up hoping the FBS will save them financially, but it still had to work financially.
4. If we are competitive academically with Big 12 schools, what kind of commitment would it take to be athletically competitive? I think it would take state involvement and are they willing to cough up some money to go P5? Couldn't an argument be made we are closer in comparison to Iowa State, OK state, and some of the other land grant colleges than MWC schools?
There are a lot more factors, but these are just a few.

If the Mountain West wanted to expand, I'd be intrigued. The West division teams there would make for really good rivalries.
Conference USA
MAC
Sunbelt
Those conferences would be a bad fit.
It doesn't appear NDSU is on their radar however.

The only way this becomes exciting again is if someone pulls NDSU's scholarships. The average score for NDSU's 23 total FCS playoff games is 33-13.
In a perfect world, the competition would step up so we could have some parity. The "competition" needs to do their part so NDSU can actually "bring on the competition". I think we'd all love to see a potential powerhouse like Montana or James Madison bring an undefeated or 1-loss team to Frisco. Yesterday felt like an Alabama vs Northern Illinois championship.
