It's no longer a fair catch, but the ball is dead as soon as anyone possesses it. For example, if the returner muffs the ball in the air after it hits the ground, he's not protected to complete the recovery like he would if that happened without the ball hitting the ground. If they had ruled a fair catch signal on the field and he took off running with whistles blowing, then it could have been a delay of game foul. They probably could have ruled that here, but I need to check if replay can do that.

I doubt it was the point. There has been a lot of chatter lately that a point is OK as long as he doesn't wave his hand. I assume this crew heard the same message. They probably felt the odd wave of his hand 3 or 4 times was enough of a signal even if he didn't intend it.
