My mother in law lives in Iowa City so I know the area very well. My wife and boy as well as friends from college will be meeting up for a great weekend in Iowa City.
For some info - stay in Coralville. It is right next to Iowa City and has the mall, nicer hotels, and more restaurants. (Think how West Fargo and Fargo connect - it is the same with Coralville and Iowa City).
Also, there is the Hawkeye Express train that runs from Coralville to pretty close to Kinnick Stadium. I do not know the cost, but it helps to avoid traffic.
There is a great casino south of Iowa City by 20 minutes - Riverside Golf Resort and Casino, located in Riverside Iowa. I have spent many evenings in their poker room when visiting the mother in law. They have a great Friday night seafood buffet and the hotel and casino are one of the nicest I have every stayed in. (I have played and/or stayed in over 21 different casino hotels in the country and this one is easily in my top 3).
If you have any questions about Iowa City or the area, send me a message and I will help out as much as I can.
Dont know where a majority are staying. But Iowa City books up fast. Here is a link---http://www.booking.com/searchresults.en.html?city=20040263&aid=848735.
There is also a Sheraton and Hilton. WARNING the hotels rally jack up their rates on football weekends. The further from IC you get the cheaper the rates. The trick is to get a room. So book early.
Im staying at the Marriott in Coralville. They also have a really good in house restaurant.
I doubt Iowa will provide a place for our fans. The tailgate scene is huge there but its broken up over many many parking lots all over the place. Plus house parties are abundent. Finkbine golf course is an option but youve got a pretty good walk to get to the stadium. Or you can take your chances and get there real early and pay someone 25.00 to park in there yard close to the stadium. If a group of people really want to tailgate together I suggest you go to Coralville and tailgate at a couple of lots by some of the hotels. You then pay 10.00 to get on the Hawkeye Express(train) which takes you right to the stadium and picks you back up after the game. Then you go the south end of Kinnick on Melrose and enjoy all of the food vendors who rent the yards of the people who live there. Which is the way to go because the traffic is horrendous around the stadium .

Just booked rooms at Country Inn & Suites By Carlson, Coralville for 129 a night. Get a room even if you don't know your plans a year from now. You can always cancel or transfer to someone on Bisonville next year.
you mess with the ^Bison^ you get the horns
Just booked in Coralville, looking forward to seeing Kinnick for the first time.
I hope you post next year when it is closer to game time for those like me that will not know if they can make it to this game yet...your info is very helpful and since you know the area, I would have questions for you when the time comes...I have horrible memory, I will never remember this post.
You should stay at the Big Ten Inn in Coralville in order to get the "Big School" experience..................ok.............that was sarcasm............I wouldn't let my pet cockroach stay there.
For this season during the Hawkeye's homecoming weekend against Illinois (game on Saturday October 10th)......there are tons of rooms available. Priceline shows the Motel 6 on the south side of Cedar Rapids (about 25 minutes from campus) at $45 that Friday night the 9th. And it's one of the better Motel 6 places I've stayed.

The good news is that Iowa ticket sales seem to be at a 10 year low. On the weekend of the Iowa State game, Iowa State had more fans in their stadium than Iowa had in theirs for the first time ever when they played at home on the same day. There will be plenty of additional tickets available from the ticket office for you guys to snatch up. And you don't have to worry about the whiny Illinois State type issue.
I think you guys should tailgate in the lot by the Hawkeye Express. Caravan all your buses and park them right along the train tracks. It is a long way from the stadium, but very high profile. The Iowa fans will hate it. There really is no other option that fits your style of tailgating. Iowa is tucked in an "urban" context and all the tailgating is in little enclaves. Nothing like the fields in Ames before the Iowa State game. The closest is the lot by the train. Or some paved lots across the river, but that is a long walk.
Looking forward to seeing your takeover of Iowa City and defeat of the team wearing "dirt and urine" colors.
