Besides when a team completely sells out to stop the run, that's when you break an 70 yard TD run because the safeties are playing at the the line of scrimmage.
Why was time put back on the clock during the goal line stand???

Didn't Montana take a timeout? I think that's what happened.

At least they didn't get to the point of getting the same three seconds back three times to run a play three times, have an illegal substitution, and have an official reject signing the game off to eventually have a committee led by eastern bloc countries vote along political lines rather than the basketball rulebook to eventually keep it wrong. All the while the game itself was being manipulated by the FIBA secretary general who had no authority but everyone was too scared to call him off. What was kind of funny about it all was the FIBA secretary general Renato Jones thought the Soviets had zero chance in hell of winning and just wanted to make sure it all looked like they weren't screwing them over even though the Soviets were the ones who maintained enough ambiguity in their actions to keep everyone guessing when they called a time out and whether they changed their mind or not.

There were a lot of rule changes after that game especially about how you could call timeouts.

Run the ball. Pick up three. Timeout. Run the ball. Pick up three. Timeout. 4th and one gives you a lot of options. Even if you still punt, it still becomes 80+ yards with 1:30 on the clock and no time outs. They can't run and they can't use the middle of the field as effectively because even though they set up fast, there are still a couple of seconds run off before each snap with 1st down resets. They would have to give up downs to spike the ball. If they score a TD, it has to be through the air and Gustafson still threw the ball incomplete 45% of the time during the game. The way it turned out, they didn't have to have a perfect last drive to win the game. If you took away all of their wiggle room, it would of had to be perfect. That is the major difference between running and passing.

It was a great learning experience and will give everyone on the team a lot to work on.
