Buchanan ranks Greenfield as the 10th best small school prospect which I believe usually puts him in the 6th/7th round pick range.

Based on his rankings SDSU should have 3 draft picks between Greenfield, McCormick, and Isaiah Davis with 4 other guys (LB Stalbird, the Janke twins, and the TE Heins) who should get pretty good rookie FA deals.

Thought this was an interesting factoid when I heard about the fact that Michael Penix Jr will be 24 in a few weeks in some of the criticisms of the Falcons pick last night: Penix is one day older than Trey Lance.

It still burns me to see Trey listed at or near the top of any all-time draft busts list when the guy is only 23 and still has never really gotten a shot despite being the 3rd overall pick.

Well he definitely is one of the biggest busts ever.
He had his chance. Sam Darnold was even better.

Didn’t make a poor decision financially, but made a poor decision in terms of his career in coming out early (assuming a catastrophic injury doesn’t occur).

Had his chance to be a backup? That's not a chance.

Had his chance? 2 starts after being named full-time starter. Neither of which had Deebo, Kittle, and of course McCaffrey. The aforementioned, along with Purdy and Shanahan have a combined number of Super Bowls as Trey has. Even anti-Lance Colin Cowherd constantly brings up "what if Purdy was on the Panthers?" Trey being labeled a bust after 2 starts is comical.

His chance was taken away from him by injury. The one thing he really needed was game reps, and he didn’t get those. We still have no idea what Trey can or can’t do in the NFL. A lot of people seem to forget that Trey was coming off a major injury last year. The 49ers went with the sure thing in Darnold for the backup spot. Can’t blame them for sticking with a vet with game reps in that position over a development guy coming off a major injury.

Trey is a prefect example of the role luck sometimes plays. Opportunity is also key. Sometimes getting the right coach or team at the right time lauches a career. Nothing about sports is prefect. The best players don't always become the All Pros. Sometimes through their own actions and sometimes through others.

In his case he was negatively impacted by the 2020 season postponement. Given the information he had about his draft status and that Spring season, he made the choice 100% of people in his position would make. In hindsight would he be in better shape if he had played? Possibly but what if he was injured. Maybe he drops out of the first round but ends up somewhere that he can get more of an opportunity. The injury was unfortunate and then to have Purdy step up like he did changed his course. Now he's had 6 seasons after high school where he's only played one season plus a handful of other games. Technically someone who is drafted 3rd overall doesn't have anything to show after 3 years would qualify as a bust. He's young enough he could still step up if given the opportunity.

His chance was taken away due to his play.

Deer in headlights. Sorry but the folks who do this for a living are all in concurrence with it.

    He’s not good.
