Default The Money Side of Athletics

Interesting article in regards to cost of college athletics.

    http://www.startribune.com/as-colleg...ing/310548681/

I always find it fascinating that the big schools get more and more revenues, but have little excess cash to show for it.

Shows how much expensive it is to move up or compete at the top level.

Minnesota is middle of the road really when it comes to revenues for the power five. Where to they spend all the money?

I'm amazed at the level of power and influence of college athletics, when, as a whole, it wouldn't make it even halfway up the fortune 500 if it were a single public company. It would be ranked right above Family Dollar Stores.

With Family Dollar being much more profitable.

How many scholarships does U of M have than NDSU? 50? If so, how do they spend 85 million more.

Easy... Stadiums without corner supports, and nickname recommendation committee preparatory task force elimination programs. Both highly effective, I might add.

What happens when you get this kind of money you add another layer of employees to do the work of ones above them. This is done because most think they need to add staff to complete "more" work they have to do. But in some cases it is money spent on position that are not needed, but they get buddies jobs. I understand that salaries for coaching position go up at the next level along with other administrative staff. It is still a lot of money out the window for most part.

Nice to have staff to fire before yourself when things go poorly. Also helps create at least the illusion of authority/power within an organization. "Well Jim manages 40 people!"
