It sounds like they were expecting more laterals like the previous play which is why they didn't have Megatron out there on defense like they normally do in the Hail Mary situations.

It is illegal to grab the facemask. The facemask was not grabbed. The ref who made the call was screened from actually seeing a "grab". #1 rule of officiating; call only what you see and do not assume. Result: Bad call and change in game's outcome.
