Second, we so badly need this FCS championship game to be at like 6pm it is ridiculous. Maybe that will never happen cause of the NFL playoff games, but then it needs to be moved to Friday for the maximum viewership. Shoot, I sometimes sit down at night and watch the Division II title for a while because it is on in the evening, but that would never happen if it was midday.
Maybe the the date next year might contribute? Basically will be the second week in January.

I mean now what for the program? You can toss me all of the "who cares about the toilet paper bowl in hoople north Dakota " one line zingers all you want to...it isnt going to change my mind. Most JMU fans are clamoring for a move up and the once weres certainly arent regretting it now that they're there.

Yea yea conference invite. Yea yea budget. If it's something in the vision of the AD to move up in the near future,I'd imagine those fans like me would help grease the wheels even more.
I am 110% pro move to FBS, our admin needs to start working on getting an invite or putting together a conference. We have outgrown the FCS, it has been a slow delcine since GSU and App St left.
NDSU to the FBS always. In all ways.

NDSU's tv ratings mean absolutely nothing to me. Why do they matter?

Wyoming can get some really good numbers if they get to the MW championship game, a bowl game, and get some games with power 5 schools. But most of the games on ESPN have pretty weak rating. They don't even list CBS Sports Network because it's on the bottom of the pecking order. The best Wyoming team in 2016 had 5.25 million but we are pretty routinely in the 2-4 million range. And our statewide NBC has some pretty crazy ratings and covers a huge area with 100% availability and when you throw in the lakes, eastern montana, northern south dakota, and now expanded kook tv.. its a shit ton of people

My issue with the move up right now is what conference would we be a part of. There are only 4 that make any sort of sense (MAC, MWC, Big 10 and Big 12) and two of those aren't going to happen. With the MAC and the MWC they don't make too much sense either for transportation alone. Every one of those road games would be plane trips and probably for every single sport as I would assume we would try to move the entire athletic department into those leagues if possible.

I know UND had plenty of other issues when they had to cut sports back a few years ago, but I think the biggest issue was when they joined the Big Sky. Every road game was a plane trip. Those add up big time when you are sending your teams to Arizona and the West Coast many times throughout the year. It would be interesting to see how successful (both athletically and financially) NDSU would have been if we would have been allowed into the Big Sky when we jumped up to D1.

There is no shortage in barriers (including additional athletic department scholarships) to moving up but the path that makes the most sense is a football only agreement (leaving the other Olympic sports in the Summit) or creating a new FBS conference (which can't be done right now per the NCAA). If NDSU could find a football only agreement the additional cost to the department wouldn't be in travel but instead scholarships and increased expenses in recruiting, etc.

Dang. You may have won this one, Herdbot, with all your data and facts. But I'm telling ya, we need to be thinking about the next level. And we need to be ahead of the curve, not wait for things to unfold in 4-5 years with new tv deals and such. What ever happens to the G5, we may not get an opportunity to participate when that time comes because all doors may be closed and locked at that point. Didn't anyone see the movie 2012? Or read the Noah account in Genesis? Or see videos of the last helicopters out of Saigon? We need to get on board. Pronto.

You can also start a new FBS football conference if enough existing FBS schools join. You could probably pull in a 2-3 independents in such a conference and maybe recruit some others. Sure, it's a long shot. But we should be planning how to traverse one or more paths to FBS than simply eyeballing the paths, throwing up our hands, and saying they're all too difficult to navigate. I honestly believe that if we publicly let it be known that we wanted an FBS invite, there'd be a groundswell of support from sports commentators and journalists and from football fans who believe NDSU should be given a shot at that level, given our success heretofore. There'd be pressure for one conference or another to step up and give us the opportunity to compete.
