    Default Gophers 2015 football season

Gophers football coach Jerry Kill was asked which players stood out after their first spring practice Tuesday.

"Jeff Jones was kind of amazing, that he could pick things up that quick, because he hasn't practiced with us one time," Kill said.

Jones was the University of Minnesota's top recruit in the 2014 class, but the four-star Minneapolis Washburn running back was not eligible in fall semester. He earned eligibility for spring semester and thus the opportunity to be a part of spring practice.
Running back is a position group of focus this spring as Minnesota looks to replace record-setting tailback David Cobb, who has turned his attention to the NFL draft.

Jones is one of four players looked at as a possible replacement for Cobb. Offensive coordinator Matt Limegrover said it could be a committee approach, including Berkley Edwards, Rodney Smith and Rodrick Williams.
    Jeff Jones - 6' 0" 198 lbs - FR
    Berkley Edwards - 5' 9" 190 lbs - SOPH - 30 att, 140 yds - 3 recpt, 24 yds (2014)
    Rodney Smith - 5' 11" 200 lbs - RFR
    Rodrick Williams - 5' 11" 247 lbs - SR - 23 att, 114 yds, 3 td's (2014)

Tommy Olson said on power trip show this morning that gopher offense is toying with going no huddle this year per his buddies still on the team.

There are more recruiting offers for the Gophers in the State of Minnesota for 2016 than 2015.
The Gophers only had 2 scholly recruits this year, and only lost 2 recruits out-of-state (I believe).
This year there are 7 Minnesota offers showing up on Gopherhole's 2016 recruiting page so far.

Seth Green - East Ridge - QB - 6'4 210 lbs - Committed to Oregon (Minn offer, I believe Green has transferred to a high school in Texas due to a family move)

    Carter Coughlin - Eden Prairie - DE/LB - 6'3 205 - Minnesota Offer
    Sam Schlueter - Mayer Lutheran - OL/DL - 6'6 280 lbs - Minnesota Offer
    Tyler Johnson - Minneapolis North - QB/ATH - 6'2 185 lbs - Minnesota Offer
Jojo Garcia - East Ridge - DE - 6'3 275 lbs - Committed to Minnesota
    Matt Kegel - Chaska - OL - 6'5 295 lbs - Minnesota Offer
Thomas Barber - Armstrong - LB/RB - 6'0 225 lbs - Minnesota Offer (brother of former Gophers Marion and Dom)

StarTribune is reporting a big 2016 recruiting weekend for the Gophers, including LB Carter Coughlin from Eden Prairie (4 stars) visiting. They say Coughlin will make his decision within the week - he is choosing between the Gophers,
    The Ohio State and Oregon.
It's interesting as to who the competition is nowadays, seems like the Gophers used to lose players to Notre Dame and Wisconsin and Iowa, among others. In 2015 4 star DE Jashon Cornell of Cretin-Derham Hall signed with Ohio State, and the Gophers also lost the recruiting battle for Sioux Falls Roosevelt's Grant Schmidt (OT) to Ohio State.

Oregon signed 3 star DT Drayton Carlberg (DeLasalle) in 2015, but Minnesota seemed only interested in him as an OL, so did not seem to consider that a recruiting loss. For 2016 Oregon already has a verbal from QB Seth Green, who played for East Ridge.

    youserrouser!
The Gophers win a recruiting battle with The Ohio State and also Oregon over 2016 in-state LB Carter Coughlin.
Now, granted, both his parents were athletes at Minnesota, and his grandfather was a former AD there (Tom Moe),
but still Ohio State is still The Ohio State and Oregon is, well, very green and gold and good.
I'm still of that school of thought that the better Jerry Kill and Minnesota do, especially in recruiting,
the more Minnesota high school athletes will be left over for NDSU to recruit,
as the Gophers will do better in their out-of-state recruiting.

I agree with this completely. NDSU is not going to sign 3 and 4 star recruits anyway so the Gophers can have them and leave the rest to us. It's when the Gophers sign 1 and 2 star recruits is when it can hurt us.

The Gophers do have 8 offers out to MN kids this year which is a huge number. I'm guessing there may not be many FCS kids in MN this year.

Its a very good 2016 MN class top to bottom. Good Oline, but playmakers as well.

Gophers RB Jeff Jones showing promise as a slot-back (as well as RB).....

    http://www.startribune.com/sports/go...297745021.html

Josh Campion has started 39 games at tackle for the Gophers, but the 6-5 senior moved to right guard this week, allowing the Gophers to use 6-7 Ben Lauer at left tackle and 6-9 Jonah Pirsig at right tackle.

“Love it; I think it’s been a great move,” Limegrover said. “It makes us a little thin at tackle,
but I love what [Campion’s] doing in there. He’s a big physical kid.”
IIRC Campion is the younger brother to former Bison Pete Campion (also a NFL draft pick - 7th rd by Carolina)
Lauer was also being recruited by NDSU before Minnesota came in late with an offer (PWO IIRC).

    You're correct...
    OFFICIAL BISONVILLE SPONSOR OF:
Tatanka™ brand humor. Gary Bettman's incompetence. The process of recommending a task force to recommend a process to be suggested to another task force, and of meetings called to discuss future meetings. The 21.3% of teh university students that, unlike Tatanka, are online-only, and the 15+% that never step foot in North Dakota. And hating Detroit...

Lauer was a grey shirt, actually. Risky move but it paid off for him
