Team to Beat: Oral Roberts. From 1998 to 2012, the Golden Eagles were part of the Summit League, and now—after a stint in the Southland Conference—they’re back. Oral Roberts is well-positioned to make a run for the Summit League title, especially with Nebraska-Omaha still ineligible to compete in postseason. The Golden Eagles boast a veteran weekend rotation that features junior righthander Guillermo Trujillo (3-4, 3.11), sixth-year senior Kurt Giller (3-4, 4.61) and senior Jacob McDavid (1-1, 2.36). The Golden Eagles will miss SS/3B/C Jose Trevino (.304/.359/.491 with 10 home runs), but they return experience up the middle in second baseman Matt Brandy (.277/.389/.370) and Emmanuel Forcier (.276/.379/.356).
Player of the Year: Clayton Taylor, inf, Nebraska-Omaha. Taylor built on a strong freshman year with an even better sophomore campaign. Taylor batted .342/.421/.599 with nine home runs and a league-leading 48 RBIs, ranking second in the conference in hits (64), doubles (17) home runs and slugging percentage and first in total bases (112).
Pitcher of the Year: Adam Bray, rhp, South Dakota State. Bray went 5-7, 2.80 last year, leading the league with 103 innings. The senior righthander paired a league-leading 95 strikeouts with just 17 walks and allowed only one home run. Not overpowering, Bray can touch 90 mph with his fastball and throws an above-average curve.
Freshman of the Year: Tony Kjolsing, 3b, South Dakota State. Kjolsing will bat leadoff for the Jackrabbits. He provides speed at the top of the order, and despite his 5-foot-11, 175-pound frame, flashed power in the fall, hitting four home runs.
