Key FCS Games:
YSU at SDSU ESPN3- For YSU playing SDSU has been no fun at all. The Penguins have dropped six straight games to SDSU, including a 42-13 drubbing that basically knocked YSU out of the playoffs last season. Perhaps the only silver lining for YSU is that Austin Sumner will not be at QB, Sumner has thrown for over 850 yards and has 11 touchdowns against YSU in three games. Zach Zenner has only rushed for over 100 yards once vs YSU, if YSU can keep him under 100 again it will put a lot of pressure on QB Zach Lujan. SDSU was fortunate to escape the UNI Dome after Lulan and their offense made some critical mistakes, teams will likely continue to lock down on Zenner and force Lulan beat them. The winner of the game will still be within striking distance of NDSU and ISUR in the MVFC and will separate itself a bit from the MVFC pack.
Charleston Southern at Coastal Carolina 2:30 p.m. MASN/ASN- After dropping a game to Presbyterian now Charleston Southern faces a must win game against CCU if it is to keep its FCS playoff dreams alive. CSU does not have a schedule that will be good enough to get it an at-large bid so the Buccaneers must win the Big South autobid. CCU meanwhile will be looking for revenge in this match up, CSU is the only FCS team not named NDSU that has beaten CCU in either 2013 or 2014. If CCU can get by the Buccaneers all that stands in their way of an undefeated regular season is a game against Liberty.
Southeast Louisiana at Stephen F. Austin 3 p.m. SLC TV- SFA is a team that some may wonder why nobody is talking about as a playoff team, at 5-2 their record certainly looks the part but the reality is that the Lumberjacks haven't beaten anybody yet. This match up at home against SLC title favorite SELA will be their first chance to make its mark on the Southland. SFA is led by Payton award candidate Gus Johnson who has rushed for over 3,200 yards in his career at SFA and almost 1,000 yards this season. SFA's offense is also bolstered by QB Zach Conque who averages just under 250 yards of total offense per game and has 17 touchdowns(8 passing and 9 rushing). For SELA they have their own Payton award candidate in duel threat QB Bryan Bennett, Bennett averages 270 yards of total offense per game and has 22 touchdowns(12 rushing and 10 passing). Shutting down either offense will be challenge, this will likely be a high scoring affair, as both teams have gone for 30 or more points in their past 3 games. This will be SELA's last tough road test in the SLC, if the Lions can escape Homer Bryce Stadium with a win they will control their own SLC autobid destiny.
FCS Game of the Week:
Indiana State at SIU 6 p.m. ESPN3- The MVFC has turned into the SEC, every week the conference is home to the FCS game of the week and this week is no different. Both Southern Illinois and Indiana State have lost two straight games and are facing a must win situation. The loser of this game will likely need to win out to make the FCS playoffs, which at the midway point of the conference season would be a tall task. A major blow was dealt to SIU's offense last week when running back Malcolm Agnew went down with a foot injury, and as a result he will miss this week's homecoming game against the trees. That will put more pressure on QB Mark Iannotti and TE MyCole Pruitt to bear the offensive load, it will also require the 3-4 defense of Dale Lennon to be even more stout against Mike Perish and Co. This is also a game where we will find out what Indiana State is made of, after starting the season on a tear the trees have been battered by their MVFC foes. Last year Indiana State fell apart at the first sign of adversity, this is where we will find out if Mike Sanford's team has toughened its resolve. Whoever wins this game I expect to find some momentum and get on a roll and be one of the MVFC teams to make the FCS playoffs.
