There is no upside to be had by just getting bigger..The rivalries are the best part of the MW by far. It extends to the other sports as well..

Thats what the Big Ten said and then they added Penn State and Nebraska. Everyone is excited to play those teams who had no rivalries
Not saying the MWC will ever get teams like that but the reality is fans want to watch good games. Almost every conference has great rivalries. The Missouri Valley has 4 teams in North and South Dakota all along the interstate

You are correct..The MW won't be adding any schools like Nebraska and Penn State. It is unlikely they will be adding anyone unless they lose 4 or more schools. The league played with 8 members before. The MW will be fine..
Talking Bison on Dan Patrick... Pauly thinks we should make a move to BIG 10. Would take us over Rutgers he said.

8 teams is the bare minimum to even exist. For a few years, teams will get a larger piece of the pot until they are up for renegotiating. If you lose 4 teams it will probably be 1 or 2 Cali teams and any combination of Boise, Colorado State and Utah state. Suddenly that TV contract is as valuable as Conference USA.

I do not think they will lose 4 schools. P5 conferences are not clamoring to add a bunch of MW schools. The very large exit fees puts a severe damper on schools going to some other G5 conference.
I think SDSU is very attractive and will get P5. Other schools, not so much. 12 is not the golden number. 10 works. 9 is the absolute perfect size for football. 8 game schedule, 4 on the road,4 at home true round robin.
11 schools is awkward but workable. No need to get to 12..
I know some here are hoping the MW gets gutted so they have to come begging for schools to join..That just seems wildly unlikely.
