Any conference trying to go it with only 8 schools though would need balls of steel right now.

To me a 9FB/10BB config is smart: 8 conf FB games, 18 conf BB games. If someone plucks two FB schools you still meet NCAA FBS all-sport conference minimum 7 FB members.

After that 9/12 works well too.

Serious question (I'm ignorant about these things) : Would UTEP & NMSU add better media exposure than NDSU?

NM and west Texas have more media eyeballs. And more potential students.

You have 5 P5s in that Midwest cluster, but TX (28M) will have 6 P5s plus 7 G5s for a total of 13 FBS programs

"Eyeballs" is a misleading word. "Market" is a better term, and I think the answer is clear. NDSU would be a great FB add for a top G5 conference
