If that happens and the P4 split from G6, then perhaps reevaluate then. For now, it makes most sense to try to join an existing FBS conference. I’m not fully convinced the door is closed on MW and MAC. Both technically have CFP access today, though MW teams have much higher odds of being selected.
Montana st vs idaho on espn2 got 75k viewers. (Week 7)
Toledo buffalo on espnu got 40k. (Week 7)
Ndsu vs sdsu on espn2 got 174k. (Week 8)
Texas vs georgia in the same time slot got 13.1M (week 8)
Ndsu vs sdsu had identical viewership to fresno vs unlv on fs1. 174k (Week 6)

Same viewership as two teams they invited, and on unlvs historic run as well.

Watching SHSU v. FIU. Terrible football and no crowd. ESPNU trying not to show empty stands. For those saying ANY FBS conference is a go, I disagree.

Holy shit Miami Vice uniforms.
Did we really end on a loss to KC Keeler?
What would our "Fargo" unis look like?
If we do not get an invite when the dust settles on this, we could tell the NCAA that we have no interest in participating in their little playoffs due to lack of competition and claim bowl eligibility.
"Teams in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) are allowed to participate in bowl games because the NCAA allows teams in lower divisions to participate in bowl games. However, the playoff structure in the FCS discourages most high-caliber teams from participating in bowl games. Instead, teams would rather compete for their division's national championship."
However, it's likely that 6 win FBS teams would be selected ahead of us possibly leaving us out of the picture. On the other hand, we have more brand recognition than many FBS schools, so who knows? Someone with more knowledge of how this would work, please chime in?
It wouldn't. Most of the bowls have tie-in agreements to specific FBS conferences. And beyond that if there are not enough 6 win teams, they select 5 win FBS teams instead. There's really NO path for a FCS team to participate, unless a new bowl is created specifically for that purpose (eg: the MEAC-SWAC Celebration bowl). I suppose we could create the MVFC-Big Sky IHatePlayoffs Bowl
All the eligibility rules are documented. There's no path in to a FBS bowl game, unless a team is in the 2nd year of FBS transition with 6 FBS wins, and even that puts you at the end of the line with no guarantee of participation. If there are enough 6 win teams, transitioning teams are left out.
